I recently read Sammy Hagar's autobiography, "Red." While he doesn't have any reason to be nice about the way the Van Halen brothers treated him, he also doesn't have to lie about it, he's not a bitter guy and he's doing exactly what he likes. The problem with them is that they drank so much and for so long you just can't escape the effects - Eddie had hip replacements because his bones were necrotic from alcohol poisoning, his teeth fell out, he's been "sober" Hollywood-style off and on for a long time. You just can't drink a case of beer or a couple of fifths a day for decades and still expect to have the brain connections needed to write fantastic new music. He may still live for a long time - Garcia fell into the heroin heavy in '79 but still dragged around for another 15 years. Everybody just wants to hear "Hot for Teacher" and feel 15 again and the band may be able to comply.
