new Van Halen!!!

I do think that they're caught between rock and a soft place - their "Sammys" were the teen-prom stuff, their earlier success was due to Eddie's guitar and Roth's flamboyant, ummm, "singing style?" Aerosmith is in the same place... if they do something different, they're accused of selling out their fans and if they do the Same Ol' (Stuff), they're accused of not growing. Bob Dylan even talks about it in his "Chronicles" book, is there any point in trying to write songs knowing that you'll never reach the same combination of anger & hopefulness & testosterone that drove "the good stuff."

Van Halen's fans want want to be 15 again and they want Van Halen to be 25 again, but you won't be seeing any of Eddies knee slides or Roth's splits off the drum riser. At least you don't have zits to pop. KISS may have had the best idea without even knowing it way back then - who do really think is wearing those costumes nowadays....

Hell, KISS are wearing wigs now, along with Twisted Sister.  But there's the whole spandex thing...who wants to see 60 year old men in spandex?

I can't believe this thread, if you substitute polaticians names for the rock stars and political issues for the songs you guys are argueing over, this thread is shut down 10 pages ago.

And really, your gonna drag Jimmy Buffet into this mix? He's an American icon, like him or not.

Yes.  Like him or not, I'm mentioning him....and I've done it before on another Sammy/Dave/VH thread.  The similarities are uncanny.

Yep...both have bad hair, wear bad Hawaiian shirts, sing about islands and drinking, and have a fanbase older than dirt.  :laughing3:

I am proud of every year I have earned. And yes I am a member of AARP. Time to check ones attitude.

that was actually confirmed a couple of weeks ago..

back to the music... this actually rocks!

Can't believe that people think this is weird.. last time they had Bob Marley opening.. this is just DLR being funny. I did not expect a top Hard Rock act anyway.

It sounds funny at first, but think about it.  Are they (is Eddie) going to have another gun slinger, young or old, warm up the crowd for them (him).  Nope, he fires all of them for doing his act.  Solution, get an opener from the 70s and 80s that has a guitar, but whose music isn't written around the guitar.  Or......and this is probably more accurate, who did they ask 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc., and who said no.  Dream Theatre, Iron Maiden, and Queensryche, they're cordial enough to tour with each other.

Well, throw me under the bus, but I never thought they were that great of a band to begin with.  Yeah, I liked "1984."  What 10 year old didn't?  Yeah, Eddie's a great guitarist.  Yeah, they have some great songs, but really, I've just never been overly into them.  :dontknow:

If VH announced they were gonna hang up their spandex, I'd be a little disappointed, but only because I grew up with some of their songs.  I wouldn't miss them like I'd miss Megadeth or Overkill.

Last time it was Bob Marley's sons band...they were awful!

I am dead-certain that Eddie Van Halen would never ever allow John Petrucci to open for him in any way, shape or form.

I agree.  JP would make Eddie look like an amateur...from a technical aspect.  As for listening to one over the other, I'd rather listen to Eddie.  While I respect JP's talent and technical know-how, I find his playing a bit boring to listen to.
