Latest Project... Arrived!!!

Pretty cool top there Rene, but how you going to pick up on the pick up routes. I've seen it done a half a top at a time, the guy just glued down half the top and followed the rout for half the pocket. Then glued the other half and followed suite....But this is going to be a bit more technical.... :icon_scratch:

maybe drill small holes where the pickups approximately will be, then enlarge them using ... er... something....

can you get a router bit with the bearing on the bottom?

That's kinda what I was thinking, not sure if they make the bits with bearings on the bottom or not? :dontknow:

They make them, but you need a good piece of clearance on the bottom; 1/32" or so for the gap between bit and bearing, 1/4" or so for the bearing, and another 1/16" for the set screw on the bit bottom.

Best bet is to make templates and mark their position on the body, then put the holes back on.

That's where the plexiglass template should come into play again.

I transfered all the routes from the body blank to that so it should allow me to drill with enough precision the holes to get the router started. The only issue is that the router bit that I have is a bit too large diameter for the corners of the J-pickup so I will have to square those up a bit with a small sanding drum in my Dremel. The template also has the positions for the bridge holes so it should be pretty straightforward to drill those as well. I expect the really delicate part to be thinning the top where the 5-position swich is going.

Moving along now....
Glueing the top to the bottom, everything clamped down:

The complete body, just needs the top to be routed to the contour of the bottom, shaping of the area around the horns, and cutting of the f-hole. Well, it's not really an f-hole. You'll see.

Good news and not so good news.

The good news is that the top arrived this morning. It's still in one piece, it's nice and flat, there's a lot of nice figure, and it's big enough that it will cover the entire body - I was a bit worried with that lower horn.

The bad news is that there seems to be a Joint Venture between the Brazilian Customs and the Belgian ones. I got charged 51.26 Euro import duties... on a top that cost $95.00... that's more than 50% tax, nobody pays anything close to that except Fernando...

don;t forget the amount the company charges you, just for looking in the parcel to see what it is. in dutch its called 'klaringskosten'. If you're from Belgium, I think you will understand what I mean.

51-17=34euro, which is perhaps 'too much' for just the cost of the billet, but dont forget, they also charge tax over shipping costs, so all in all, its right where you expect it to be.

tough huh...european litegation.

"Kosten voor voorschot" = 0.26 Euro
"Formaliteiten" = 25.00 Euro
"BTW Import België" = 26.00 Euro

The guy from the Post told my wife that he's been to the office to ask for an explanation because he also thought the cost was excessive. On all shipments from Warmoth or Stew Mac I count 25% of the purchase amount (including shipping as import), that is usually head on. This was really completely off the beam.

It's René - with the accent on the e going from lower left to upper right. The French call that 'accent aigu', the 'sharp' accent. It makes the letter it's on sound sharper. The first e would be pronounced 'uh' and the second 'ey'. The accent from top left to bottom right is the 'accent grave', the 'muted' accent. It makes the letter more muted. I have one of those in my family name, Labruyère. Both my first and family name are French. I was born in the Netherlands, but my family roots go back to France. For a sad story you may want to read up on the Hugenots.

That's interesting, there must have been a lot of French influence in Belgium, as I was checking out the Stella Artois website and noticed the similarities between the Belgian language and the French. I too have roots from the Netherlands, my great great grandfather on my dad's side was from the Netherlands.

And the bass is looking sharp, I had forgotten you made the plexi template...Way to think ahead... :icon_thumright:

Um... I'm Maxwell. My last name is Lewis. It used to be spelled Lewes about 400 years ago. It's English, I think.

Ruhney? ok then :D

And the 'R' would only be pronounced like an R (rolling sound) in the south of France, in Paris it doesn't roll, it would be more like 'Ghhhhuhney'...

By the way, if you ever saw the series 'Allo 'Allo! you will know what I mean (even if I say it only once).

yeah, thats what I mean. for the non-dutch speaking guys. 'formaliteiten' is the amount of money you have to pay the shipping company. they have to open the parcell, so customs can look in it, to see what the estamated value is. the fun thing with UPS, is that they already declare value, so that you don't have to pay 'formaliteiten'. kinda fucked up.
