Is that all the Schaller vintage copper? How'd you go about getting it?

The Floyd ( made by schaller) is vintage copper.  The neck plate, is from AXL guitars.  I got it on ebay.  $6.

Knobs and PU covers will also be from AXL.  The tuners I got on ebay too.  I am guessing they are GROVER knockoffs.  Antique copper as well.  Not really concerned with the tuners, the locking nut take them out of the picture.  They just have to hold and initially tighten the string for me.  I also have back up AXL tuners, but they are not as pretty.

I'd imagine the Floyd is more like vintage hardened brass, I seriously doubt it's copper, at least not pure copper. It wouldn't hold up to the abuse(too soft). No it could be made from some stuff called BECU, which is copper mixed with 2% beryllium. They used to use it to make golf club heads, but it's been banned in the US. Or it could be made from Mold Max XL, which is a hardened copper nickel tin alloy, it's used sometimes in place of tool steels.. :dontknow:

Agreed...simply the sfinish is called antiqued copper.  Not sure what it is made of.

btw: i'm jelly

They'd be silly to do anything but make them all out of the same steel, and just dribble the pretties on there. It's a Schaller? Good price! There is some perceived or hoped-for sonic advantage for brass, aluminum, titanium, "cold-rolled" steel for certain parts, but a Floyd plate (and pivot points) made out of copper or brass of any sort? If you really can sell them on the sonic advantage, so that the one-week replacement rate doesn't bother them.... :icon_scratch: planned obsolescence at it finest, good to know those AMC execs landed somewhere safe, warm, and stocked with Gremlin & Pacer parts.

it is steel underneath...it is the plate that is in question.  Yes it is made by schaller.  It is a Floyd rose ORIGINAL.  $200 was the price paid.

Here is the photo of the donor guitar.  I paid $50 for it.

i don't think berilium coper is banned in the US but i guess i could be wrong. i used to work with it a lot on f-15's for various bushings, but of coarse that's military. and on rare occasions i've used it for valve seats on high performance engines but there are newer less hazardous materials with a copper base for heat dissipation. i imagine any large scale manufacturing of BECU has very strict handling guidelines. the dust is extremely hazardous so grinding it is not suggested and a resperator is a good idea..

Don't let the KTS or Callaham or DeTemple people get ahold of "beryllium copper bearing points" or there'll be a whole new round of oneupsmanship on the gourmet guitar boards. Chose any three words:
kerrang, blooming, detailed, girthy, meaty, crunchy, grind, growl, boom, balls, assy, dirty, gritty, spanky, muscular, dirty, rich, liquid, natural, transparent, open, bell-like, violin-like, flutey, solid, silky, slithering, galloping ,snarly, gnarly, knurly, clear, creamy, scooped, spanky, sparkle, chimey, glassy, screamy , throaty
Arrange in appropriate order.... Hey, Kids! No More
raspy, burpy, whiny, howling, hissy, hiccupy, plasticine, hollow, drooly, farty, gassy, bilous, phlegmy, whimpery, grunting, blatty, pingy
Tone! Get Yer Beryllium Copper doodads here!

burst done.  For those of you who were worried about covering up too much of the top, should not worry.

it does not take too long.  about 30 minutes.  I could tweek it forever try to make it as even as possible.  Looks good now so I stopped while I was ahead.

That's one of the hardest things to do for us n00bz.  You tweak and tweak and tweak and pretty soon you have a damned mess on your hands, when you should have stopped about 40 tweaks back.

Looks great.  Beautiful work.

Did you shoot the back?

Yes.  I had to in order to cover up a big mistake I made.  I also put some tobacco brown on the neck too.
I will post some photos ASAP.
