G & L makes some fine instruments. I had an early '80s SC-3 near to their release that broke me of the Gibson habit. Lovely thing.
As for the pickup selection, it really depends on the pickups themselves. I have a couple guitars where I don't use the middle at all, and a couple where they're preferred. I only have two where I can select a bridge/neck combo, and I could live without that choice in both cases. But, that's all subjective. If you played all these, you'd likely come up with different favorites.
