McGuyver and Sixstringsamurai:  behave and be nice or go to your rooms.
Deal.
I am outta here.

Actually you're still posting.  Do you need the last word, or can you just tuck your tail between your unhelpful legs and move along?

Just a thought -

McGuyver. STFU. Almost a third of your posts now are simply attacking this guy. All of your posts are simply showing off or asking questions. This guy has helped and contributed a lot more to this forum than you have, so as for who's talking out of who's ass.....

:blob7:

Sixstringsamurai has contributed so much?  Really?  Yes I should really shut the frick up because I asked for more clarification and an actual explanation of something, rather than taking it at face value.  And I really should shut the frick up because some guy is trolling my thread, and moderators don't want to moderate.

That's makes so much sense!

Also, let's see one quote of a post of me "showing off".  You're worse than sixstring.  My three threads so far have been one out of the box thread, and two question threads, fishing to see if this forum was full of trolls, or if it was different from every other music forum.  Showing off, what a joke.

Maybe someone older and wiser than myself can get through to you...

But honestly, he is not trolling.. Even if that comment was meant to offend you, you are taking it way too far and making it into a big deal.

Just. F*cking. Stop.

Thank you Cagey, for actual information.  This is what I was looking for.  As for my hero, I'd be willing to bet that old habits die hard, which is probably why there are luthiers who have been playing for over 50 years that still wind strings with locking tuners.  Which is more-so why I asked, I suppose you think those guys are all stupid also?  Clearly I came onto these forums with doe-eyed ignorance.

I'm sorry; I shouldn't have called the guy "stupid" - I don't know any better. Guy's probably smarter than me and it's probably as you say - force of habit. I know I've got a niece who didn't like the lockers on her guitar for a long time until somebody pointed out that she was using them wrong. All those wraps of string act like a spring, and every time you stretch a string or detune it, they wind/unwind then wind up in a different place due to the friction between the post and the string.

The extreme case and the first practical acknowledgement of the problem showed up when Floyd Rose came up with his locking nut to pair up with his locking bridge (there were no such things as locking tuners back then). Clamping the string right at the nut eliminated a great deal of the tuning issues a vibrato bridge exacerbates.

It's funny that you tell me to stop, yet you're starting here.  There was no reason for you to post in this thread at all, you didn't offer anything valuable.  You're just telling me to stop defending my thread from trolls, while trolling the thread... So kindly, please stop posting if you're not going to offer anything to the discussion, like Cagey is.

Thanks, Cagey.  I just restrung them up with one-two winds each.  I generally change strings about once a week though, would you suggest restringing them without winds, or just waiting the week until the next string change?  I'm more worried about damaging the guitar's parts and pieces than I am with its tuning for the next few days.

I don't put any winds on mine beyond what just normally shows up as a result of tensioning the string up to tune. Normally results in about 90° to 180° around the peg. The only time I do it differently is when setting up a Floyd Rose for the first time. You have to loosen the strings to fully slack in order to move the bridge saddle(s) when setting intonation, and if you're bending/unbending the string at the exit point of the tuning peg's hole, it gets work-hardened and the string will break about the 3rd time you do it. Having a wrap or two on the peg prevents that angle from getting worked. Of course, that's a one-time deal unless you change string gauges so once it's set up, you don't need the wraps any more.

As for the current situation, I'd leave it until the next string change. Tensilized steel doesn't like to be worked.

Also, I should mention that if you change strings that often, be sure to buy them in bulk (if you're not already). Makes 'em so cheap you don't care about trying to save them. Even premium parts like D'Addario can get down to $2-$3 a set.

See this is one of those grey areas where everyone will tell you something A lil different.
Half to 3/4 of a turn is MORE than sufficient.

This one is what made  me go ?????

I said, somewhere between 180 and 359.  You want to quibble about a few slices of pi?

Depends what kind of pi it is. If it's banana or coconut cream pi, then I'll fight like a starving dog over a slice. Pecan pi is pretty damn good, too. And apple. Gotta love apple pi.

Haha.. Cagey, you're getting the "little sister" treatment.... :laughing7:

You know,

"Why don't you just keep you're mouth shut like Judy?? Judy's a good little girl, why can't you be too?!"

:toothy12:

I have nothing to add to the OP, as I've never used locking tuners... If I did, I would. But you know....

Sixer handled it maturely. You handled it like a bratty teenager. If I come across sounding like a bratty teenager, I've got an excuse...
