Just starting my first Warmoth build and I thought it would be a nice idea to post here with all you fine people to document the build and discuss it.

I got everything a few days ago. From the start I wanted to put a wooden control cavity cover on the back so I ordered a piece of Swamp ash. When I got the guitar from Warmoth I immediately started working on the backplate which is now done. I mounted magnets to keep it down and I'll get a photo of that up when I can.





I couldn't grain match it of course but I think it looks good. I need to color match it to the body before finishing. I'm planning on a tru-oil finish.



Anyway, any comments or suggestions I would be happy to hear them. Looking forward to working on this and sharing the experience here. So far I'm having a blast!

What are your plans for pickup switching? 3-way toggle switch?

Hey all!

Yeah a three way toggle with a push-push tone for coil switching and a volume. I didn't have Warmoth put in anything but the volume hole so I could lay the rest out myself.

My bad. I should have included a picture of some of the hardware in my first post.



The pickups are a set of Bare Knuckle Ragnaroks. Schaller locking tuners, Hipshot fixed bridge and other assorted gold hardware...LOL I think you can see the theme I'm going for. Sort of a... Metal... Sleeper build if you will.

Anyway, I'm working on getting the finish on now. I'll get some pics up after I get it done. I will say, The Tru-oil darkened it up quite a bit and its got some beautiful coloring and grain going on. It's made matching the backplate I made a bit tedious though. The neck... Man that thing looked beautiful before I even put any finish on it. But now... It just blows me away how good Tru-oil can look. Never used it on a guitar before and the last time I ever used it was on a gunstock probably 35 years ago. Very happy so far.

Nice, I think that roasted swamp ash and gold hardware will look great together. I'm actually not sure if I would try matching the backplate, ash turn kinda golden when oiled, right? Might look good.

Another idea would have been to roast the swamp ash in an oven, but I have no experience with than either. And I'm pretty sure that should have been done before cutting it.

I mean, it's your decision, but I think I would leave the backplate as it is, it kinda fits the picture with all those other beautiful woods in their natural colors.

I already color matched... Or a least closely color matched the backplate and started finishing it. But I understand what you are saying. It did cross my mind at first but...



Its coming out good. At least to me.





Its all on its way. A lot more work to do but. I have some time. I'm in South Carolina and there's a winter storm of sorts moving through. Not as bad as they are getting up north, But around here a snowflake falls and everything shuts down so.. I'm off work for a few days. Being from Indiana originally and waiting for the school bus in a 2 foot drift of snow... The way it is around here sort of tickles me...LOL

No grain filler on the body per say. It's going to be au-natural as far as the feel. Just a fine sanding and buffing before finishing and sanding of the first coat keeping it wet while I went over it with 2500 grit.

Wow, beautiful work! Glad you figured out how to post photos, because I think we're all richer now for it!

Also, really great job in matching up the cavity cover to the rest of the body. But I'm also of the mind that perfect isn't always necessary and sometimes, you just gotta go for blatantly contrasting
