Les Paul from scratch

A little more job done. The two pices for the top arrive from the carpenter; not a perfect job but a nice planning and the center joint seems nice. First step: glue the two pieces

The bottom side of the top is sanded and meets the body. Lot of clamps to hold the two pieces together and wait 24h to dry. Next step will be sanding the top excess with the drum sander and flaten the top to remove the little marks of the planner and the rests of glue

For this guitar I have purchased the Iron Gear Alchemyst P90 pickups, P90 in humbucker size; anyone have tried? what's your opinion?

I don't want to use plastics on this guitar so I'm going to make the pickup rings out of some maple top scraps. This is the raw version

First of all, amazing work - these types of threads are my fav.  Secondly, you are the master of the jig saw.

A little progress: all the sides and the top are sanded to 120 grit. I have more work on the top because there are small marks on and I want completely flat but I'm happy how it's coming. All the contours are nearly smooth and continuous, and a little flame its coming out on the top. I'm really happy with the two pieces joint of the top and the union between the top and the body has no gaps: gooood!!!

I'm amazed by these build from scratch threads.  :o

Thank YOU and all others that post these type of build / threads.
Sometimes I forget to comment in them   because I'm just in awe at the work that goes on ......

Thats looking pretty darn fine from here  :icon_thumright:
Please keep them pic's coming, even if I have to stand 20 feet away from my screen to see them  :icon_biggrin:

Nice work  :headbang:  Looking great

For this build I'm planning to mask the sapele body and the top, leaving exposed only the side of the maple. Apply cianocrylate on the side to prevent that the grainfiller and the stain for the top and the sides goes into the wood. Granifill all the sapele in black and sand. Tint the top in black and sand back (just to rise the little flame). Mask the cianocrylate covered sides (just in case) and dye all the guitar in dark red. Sand the corner of the maple top (until this point the top end remains in 90º). This give me a natural maple binding on a trans dark red guitar with black grinfilling. What do you think about the project? Anyone has tried to "protect" the faux binding with cyanocrilate?. After this, chrome hardware with a wraparound bridge and 2 IronGear Alchemist P90 pickups.

I'd suggest using clear lacquer instead of the super glue. Super glue, being so thin, can get drawn a lot further into the wood and may seal off parts of the top, making the dye uneven.

Don't ask me how I know that  :sad1:

Lacquer won't do that anywhere near as much, and is easier and safer to work with in this instance.

FANTASTIC job on this build so far!!!

One of the things that scary me about the neck construction was the installation of the truss rod. I set up my router with a brand new bit and the attachment to route straight lines. It works good but at the begining the neck moves a little and the router slips a little. Not a big deal, I can fix it.

A little sanding and the trus rod goes tight into the channel, but theres a gap at the end. As I told before, at the begining of the operation the neck moves and the router slips, so I decided to extend the gap in a straight way so later I can put a piece of wood to fill it.
