I know this isn't a W guitar, but this is the only forum I'm part of and I figure you guys wouldn't mind checking it out. We all love our wood porn.
After shooting emails back forth with Paul and Loren at PVX guitars we decided on a single cut kit. Mahogany and flamed maple cap for the body. Wenge with bubinga laminates for the neck. Ebony fretboard with Warmoth gold frets. The guys at PVX are great to deal with. This is what I received from them.
I was really impressed with the craftsmanship. They do come in a slightly rougher condition than what we're used to from W. But nothing you can't work out with a little sandpaper.
So, you guys know I just have to modify my kits. I started with the neck heel. I've always felt the PRS heel stuck out a bit to far. But these PVX tenons are long I swear you wouldn't even have to glue the neck in to play it. So here's how I carved it.
It's a very smooth transition now.
I also cut the heel position at the body to further bring it back.
And the headstock
I stated you could play it without gluing the neck and that's true. I was able to put the neck in place, locate the position of the tailpiece studs, drill those and install them. I temporarily installed tuning keys, a nut, and threw a set of strings on it. Then I was able to place the bridge it's approximate location and tune it to pitch and move the bridge around and find best spot for intonation. Used a transfer punch to mark the spots to drill. But at that point you could play it with no fluctuation in pitch. Rock solid.
Ok so I decided I wanted to dye into the wood a geisha so I penciled it out from a image I found.
After I got it dyed and inked
I covered her in masking tape and the edges with liquid masking tape ( my favorite new thing ) getting it ready for dye.
And here it is dyed.
I went for the faded blue jean look. The picture doesn't show it but I did the false binding thing as well. There is some Behlen vinyl sealer on it in the picture, so a slight glare but you get the idea.
I have a set of BKP Aftermaths set to go in it and hybrid nickel/gold hardware. Some maple pickup rings. I'm working on the headstock and I'll post pics of that soon. Thanks for looking guys. I'll get another W in the works soon.
