Greatest Supergroup ever?

There are many gifted musicians to choose from. Some play great... some compose great... some do both! I think for most of us the interesting part would be what these musicians would play as a team if they were playing together. For example, Hendrix would sound like Hendrix if he was playing with Jaco Pastorius and Dolly Parton ???  Also, if these musicians as a group would play a different kind of music from what they were playing solo or in their bands.

Anyway... the first people that I can think. It's hard to be original these days so that's what I would like to see from any new group, a crossover of many musical influences presented with a unique style.

Samples/Beats/Electronics: Liam Howlett (Prodigy)
Drums: Dave Lombardo (Slayer)
Bass: Mike Watt (Minutemen) or Peter Hook (Joy Division)
Guitars: John Frusciante - The Edge, Gregg Ginn (Black Flag) as a guest...
Cello: Patrick Cybinski (Guts Pie Earshot)
Trumbet: Erik Truffaz
Keyboards: Roddy Bottum (Faith No More)
Vocals: Mike Patton (Faith No More) - Lisa Kekaula (The BellRays)

A supergroup like this will have female bagkground singers/dancers, early Hawkind comes to mind when I think of female dancers... :) They will not play arenas, only small clubs (500-1000 people) and only no smoking shows :icon_thumright:

Drums: Joey Castillo
Bass: Nick Oliveri
Guitar: Josh Homme
Guitar: Troy Van Leeuwen
Vocals: Mark Lanegan

They would play ONLY arenas and everyone would be REQUIRED to smoke!

(...oh wait, that band exists, it's called Queens of the Stone Age)

Ok, let me try again:

Guitar: Trevor Rabin
Drums: Simon Phillips
Keys: Rick Wakeman
Bass: Billy Sheehan

For variation, guest singers only,. including:
Roger Daltrey
Phil Lynott
RJ Dio (rainbow style)
Geoff Tate
Bruce Dickenson

Like the guest vocalist thing.  Think I'd like to see Michael Schenker sit in as well...

Greatest Supergroup ever, any decade since the 60's: King Crimson.

If anyone is going to argue against people Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, David Cross, Pat Mastelotto, Robert Fripp... well...

Whether they were a "supergroup" or not...
the Beatles.
...but the were a super...group.
:icon_biggrin:

Shoulda been: Frank Zappa, Jaco Pastorius, John Bonham. I win!  :icon_thumright:

I don't hear anything modern or contemporary or breakthrough about the White Stripes. Jack is incredibly rooted in old music and pounds his guitar harder than anyone. The energy and vintage-ness is why I like their music.
:headbang:

"My Supergroup would most likely include a combination of at least 4 of the 8 people on stage in the clip below:

I honestly don't know what's not to like about this one.. it has everything you could possibly want!:
- both Jazzy and Bluesy Guitar Work
- Great Rock Solo incl. some fine shredding (make sure to watch part 2!)
- Great Harmonics
- the Most Genious Bass Player ever
- one of the most legendary keyboard players ever
- 2 of the best drummers in Music history
- and of course a brilliant song!""

a great supergroup indeed except that Howe dosnt get along with any other guitarists that I know of except maybe Martin Taylor.

Brian

Who is Martin Taylor?  Is he friends with Fender Gibson?  Or maybe Kramer Ibanez?  :icon_jokercolor:

that would've been awesome for just insane improv soloing that goes on for days and days

The thing about supergroups is that they always suck.  The end result is never really the sum of the parts.

Perfect Circle man...    Its too bad maynard holds the God Stick on that one.

My Super group... dunno..

Vox: Jared Leto (30STM)
Guitar: Adam Jones (Tool)
Guitar: Mike Einziger (Incubus)
Bass: Sean Anderson (Finger Eleven)
Drums: Jeff Burrows (Tea Party)
Keys & Effects: Walter Flakus (Stabbing Westward)

It would be pretty psychadelic
I could come up with 5 more though...

That footage is easily my favorite from Baby Snakes, and my favorite song from Yerbouti!
"Tiny is as tiny dooo!" Amazing moment!

.....I don't know.  Ever since I saw this topic I've been racking my brain to come up with something cool.  I think the "band" thing is underappreciated sometimes.  Put some guy's in a room and see what comes out, ya know.  Taking anyone out of their "element" might not work....

Well here is a idea or 2 (or more)

Just for cool Music.....
Guitar - Eric Johnson
Bass- Victor Wooten
Drums- Carter Bueford
.....needs no words!

For Rock....
Guitar- Edward Van Halen (pre Crazy)
Bass- Flea
Drums- Dave Grohl
Singer??? big rock? Chris Cornell is cool but moody at times.  Perry Farrell????? don' know???

For Metal....
Guitar- Zakk Wylde
Guitar- Dimebag Darrell (I know he's dead but..)
Bass- Robert Trujillo
Drums- Danny Carey
Singer- Either Rob Halford, David Drainman, or Chino Moreno (kinda depends what direction things are going)

For cool but wierd (or wonderful!)
Guitar- Steve Vai
Bass- Les Claypool
Drums- Mike Portnoy
Singer- not really needed but Mike Patton would be cool...

just a few Ideas..

my fave is CSNY

DITTO

And the last time I saw them, they played three sets, each an hour long.  Amazing amazing amazing.....  even more amazing was Booker T and the MG's as the "backup band" (aka, Cropper and Dunn, Booker T Jones, and Willie Hall).

Come to think of it.... Belushi, Akroyd, Cropper, Dunn, Hall, Malone, Dunne, Shaffer, Marini, (Mr Fabulous) Rubin, and Murphy.... they really could  turn goat piss into gasoline.

I know we all have different tastes, and we know that none of these guys would be likely to work well together...

But having said that, I think this would be interesting... (from a metal point of view)

Guitar 1 - James Hetfield
Guitar 2 - Dave Mustaine
Bass - Les Claypool
Drums - Danny Carey
Vocals - Devin Townsend

If anything, that combination would be a rhythm powerhouse...  Perhaps Devin could contribute some lead work as well, his guitar work is pretty amazing.

or how about this for a little more rock/punk edge:

Rhythm Guitar - Jade Puget
Lead Guitar - Adam Jones
Bass - Jeordie White
Drums - Igor Cavalera
Vocals - Adam Horowitz (Ad-Rock)

...Whoa.  On second thought, I'll just stick to the supergroups that already existed/exist, like Pink Floyd and Tool  :laughing7:

This is a recipe for disaster, especially since they both wield pointy guitars....

Yeah I know, but I skipped egos and drama in favor of musical prowess.  And I'm NOT getting into a Megadeth/Metallica debate, because I like 'em both, despite their (many) flaws.

That debate would be extremely pointless, I agree... I'll just say that I listen to Metallica on occasion, and Megadeth more rarely... I'm not a big fan of either but certain moods require one to ride the lightning.  :)
