This is my first guitar build.  I know it's kind of a strange beast, let me try to explain. I play with a lot of other guitar players and wanted a unique sound. My acoustic 6-string banjo (gold tone) fills that requirement and is a quality-built instrument.  However, it feeds-back a lot if it has any speakers facing it. So... I bought an electric 6 string banjo (also Gold Tone) but was not satisfied with the fit and finish or the tone. So... I started designing this one in September of  '10.. It is a Warmoth flame maple neck that I ordered as a paddle and then cut and carved. The banjo hardware is from Gold Tone. It has a 6 way selector switch switching two pickups (off, neck, neck and north, north, north and south, and south) .  There is a vintage-style tele pickup at the neck and a passive EMG Hz Humbucker under the head (wired to coil tap north and south). There is also a piezio pickup attached to the bottom of the head behind the bridge. Each pickup has its own vol pot. There is no tone pot although I routed a space for it ifins I change my mind. The piezio runs down one leg of a switching stereo jack, the neck and EMG hz pickups run down the other leg of the jack.  I will then use a stereo splitter to go to 1. stomp boxes and amplifier passive pickups (neck and Middle)and 2. (peizio side) acoustic amp or pa via a DI box. The body is Black Walnut, Ash, and Cherry/Maple stripping. The middle is Mahogany. The back is Quilted Maple.

And that, my friends, is the difference between a creative endeavor and just another damn blackguard telecaster.

Very nicely done, sir.  I salute you.  Talk about your dramatic entrances!

There is so much win here, it's hard to comprehend.  Win!!!  :toothy10: :toothy10: :toothy10:

I would be playing Sufjan on that all day.

I love it! There better be a video or some audio clips at the end of this build... :icon_biggrin:

Talk about raising the bar! Wicked man. Most people who couldn't be heard would just buy a Mesa dual recto, but you had to make a handcrafted work of art banjo-like instrument. Wow!

Totally agree with Jay . . . We NEED to hear this beautiful creation.  Eric, you will obey  :tard:  :tard:  :tard: . . .

As if banjo's weren't already loud enough. What's next, trombones through Marshall major's?

Actually, a cellphone recording of a Black Label Society concert through The Who's stage rig.

That's a fine piece of work. I've never seen anything like it. If I ever lose my mind completely and decide that playing a banjo would be a Good Thing, I'll be copying that design <grin>

Look forward to hearing some clips of the thing.

The idea was not to be loud, but to reduce feedback due to playing over an active head.  Banjos are loud, yes. But they are also feedback monsters. A sound engineers nightmare.
