Building my first body.

Dammit! I just realized that they tacked on a sneaky expensive shipping charge, in the paper invoice stuck on the cardboard sleeve the wood came in. They did not show this in the invoice I was emailed!  :tard:

Oh man, that kind of deception is complete garbage - I hope it's nothing too awful.  If you paid by credit card you might have some protection?

Well, $14 UPS. If I had known about this, I would have requested USPS shipping, since it's cheaper.
It was basically an oversized cardboard mailer sleeve. I only paid $10 something to ship the 7lb board of Bubinga, and $15 to FedEx the 22lbs of Walnut.

 At least that's much better than what I was worried happened - I thought they'd done something like sneak in a bogus shipping/handling charge they'd just pocket.  I'm glad it wasn't anything like that.

Quick mockup (In proportion) of the side view of the body. :blob7:

Ok, I sent the woods off to the guy that's going to prepare the blank for me.  :blob7:
Before doing so, however, I cut the Bubinga to save some scrap. I turned this rollerball pen from some of the scrap this afternoon.

The wood looks a lot oranger/browner than I expected. I'm hoping that the finished laminate top will have a nice deep red color, with oil.

Sure.
Send me a PM if you've got something in mind.

I want to go back to the statement made earlier about MOJO IS IMPORTANT

I have handed off Bard Door to a few guys onstage and when they give it back, the statement I hear is: that thing has the mojo going.

I guess what I mean is there is an additude you have to have when building your personal axe, and that is mojo

we can only study the early 1900s to learn what mojo is, and those guys had more Mojo than we can ever get, it was all about practice, traveling miles and miles between gigs, going a thousand miles to record, and dieing 30 years before they got famous. MOJO IS PLAYING MUSIC FOR MUSIC, NOTHING ELSE AND THOSE GUYS HAD IT. now pour you soul into your build, try to recapture mojo, Mojo is being able to play the music you hear when you close your eys.

Who has an idea for a neckplate? This guitar doesn't really have a particular theme, so I don't know what to do. :blob7:
The neckplate on my black Jazz bass just has my name. I'm not opposed to doing another neckplate with my name and a serial number, but on the other hand, perhaps a cool graphic would be better.

you shoukd call it  "Boobs & Nuts" or "Boobs on my Nuts"

short for Boobinga on Walnut... :icon_biggrin:

(after all, I called my Black Korina with Rosewood top "the black rose" ) :)

I was just thinking, a pair of breasts (BOOBinga) with Walnuts for nipples! Maybe throw in a Maple leaf. :dontknow:

I think the EMG singles look way better than the traditional strat style. I've never liked the direct mount look of the single strat pup wither... :dontknow:

+1, I am getting nervous as to how I am going to mount the neck pickup on my tele. I hate single coil pickups with rings...

Someone needs to design a single coil thats like the EMG, but without the little wings out the side. (Perhaps some tiny bolts in between poles that secure it to a height-adjustable woodmount down below?) That would make single coils look sooo awesome without a pickguard (kinda like a TV Jones). The tiny bolts could be under the pickup cover, and the cover could snap on after the pickup is bolted down.

I know a guy that can make you a set of pickups in any shape you want, if you want a pickup like that.

I'm fine with the mounting ears on singles, but it's the shape of the base, and also the fact that it leaves the very thin coil wire exposed that gets me.

Is he just gluing it today for you or something more?

I'm sending him the wood, and he's going to resaw the Bubinga and plane it to create a 3/8" bookmatched lam top, plane the 3/16" Maple down to 1/16", plane the Walnut down to 1 5/16" for the core, and joint the pieces so they will glue up nicely, then glue it all together.
