A new prospect.

Here at the Joan Rivers Center for the Incurably Ancient, we believe in getting our residents involved in therapy whenever possible. One of our more promising people is PhiHill. He came to me just yesterday and requested time to work in the wood shop to make some picture frames for the other residents, so considerate. Ohh, Excuse me a minute, what is it Osgood?, What do you mean he made a ladder?, Dang it Osgood, I told you that he can't be left alone. What? They found the ladder? Good!, but it's leaning against the south perimeter wall? ....Call the dog handler and come with me, he's probably headed back to that abandoned Opera Theater he uses for a shop...Blast it! This is the third time this week!..........

One Dewalt Trim Router with home made base, one Kowood Rabbeting bit, put them together with lotsa luck and held breath:

And you get pretty good binding channel, praise be to Dewalt and Kowood:

Now, do I want black plastic binding, or...that walnut veneer tape is sitting there unused... :icon_scratch:

Vienna, Austria 1813:

" Mr. Stauffer, Mr. Stauffer, did you see this in the Guild paper. There is a new guitar bridge that has come out. It is movable with a handle so the player can raise and lower the pitch."
"What are you babling about Martin?" "What is this foolishness? A movable bridge, bah, it will never work, you would not be able to keep it in tune. Who is this Floyd Rosenhauss?"
"That's the man who invented it Sir." "He's a famous guitar player."
"Never heard of him, as I said it's foolishness. Now get back to work Martin!"
"Stauffer, I am tired of your tyrant ways! I tell you it will work! I quit, I am going to America and starting my own guitar company!"
"You'll fail and be starving within a month, Martin, then you'll come begging back here."
"No I won't. I have a man who can help me, He does Marketing. He'll make sure my guitars sell!"
"What is Marketing?" Stauffer asks.
"He sends pictures of the guitars and a paper about them to all the towns and cities. And he appears in festivals and concerts, he's a guitar player too. He has a Mozart Tribute Band, and a Beethoven Tribute Band. He's very famous in America. He'll sell my guitars quickly. His calls himself "The Aaron" . You'll see, one day my Name will be bigger than your's!"
"Bah, your fired! CF Martin, get out of here. But I'm keeping this picture of The Aaron, he has such nice hair"........

.Ohh, sorry, I was daydreaming. Anyway, we now have walnut binding. All SEVEN frigging layers of it My fingers still hurt, you can't use tape to hold it in place until the last layer. So it's glue a couple inches and hold, etc. And naturally some of it is darker than the rest so I may have to stain it a little. But CAREFULLY, as I don't want to get any stain on the Korina. We'll see how it works out..

,And, as always, there's more sanding and cleaning up to do.... :icon_thumright:

Wipe it with naphtha or alcohol or something first, before you stain it. Walnut is one of those woods that darkens naturally with a clear coat. It may be more prominent than it appears without stain.

I like that walnut a lot. I can hardly wait to see it with some clear on it.

for this Red, Clear, and Blue Dyed Quilt Maple bodies , warmth use walnut strips to separate the colour dye .

so I think walnut not take stain well and only can made it darker and risky to  stain on lighter wood on side .

also it get dark like rose wood with coat .

Good idea. The veneer was wanting to delaminate a couple times as I was putting it on. Finally got it all to stick right, so I covered the top with a coat of CA adhesive and let it soak in and set, to try and solidify the whole thing. It may just be that I need to sand it all down a little more to clear the top off, as the dark lines may be residue of the CA. We'll see.

Thanks. I can kinda wait some for the clear, as finishing is not my strong suit. So I'm dreading it but looking forward to seeing it with clear at the same time. :help:

Yes, I see what you mean, thanks for pointing that out. I'll keep it in mind. :icon_thumright:

That looks great Phil.
And I must say that I really enjoyed the little daydream that you shared. You’re talented in more ways than one.  :occasion14:

Thank you Your most kind. I get inspirations like that sometimes, other times I get inspirations that would worry you. My brain is a most confusing place. Sometimes I'm not sure I would live with it if I didn't have to. :headbang:

One light coat of Tru Oil to give an idea of how the top is going.

No, I hadn't done that. But now you've got me thinking about it, thanks for the idea. :icon_thumright:

Today I recalled the gentleman who got me started building guitars. Then, for ten minutes, I cursed him bitterly.
Perhaps an explanation is in order, remember that nice looking Tele body with the walnut binding? Well forget that binding, it now resides in our dumpster where it awaits it's ultimate destiny with waste management.
Perhaps further explanation is in order. Took the pictures that I posted, then I thought I would begin smothing the sides a little with my new drum sander. Did a total of two runs around the body lightly, and that was enough heat that the binding immediatly began separating. My own fault really, I trusted the glue that came on the veneer. Shouldn't have done that.
My first impulse was to hurl the entire thing into our fireplace and do a Homer Simpson BBQ number on it. However, I did not. After applying a liberal dose of some fine nerve medicine that I have, (From the good folks at Jameson naturally.) to my coffee, I took stock of the situation and decided all was not lost after all.
So, out comes the Xacto knife and a sharp chisel and the offending binding is evicted. Then I cleaned up the channel with the router and pulled out the roll of veneer again.

I marked and cut new strips of walnut a little taller than the channel, laid out each strip and heated the glue then scraped it off. Will probably use Titebond to glue it in, but first I'll finish all but the final hand sanding on the body just in case.

But first, a little more nerve medicine and I settle down for the evening. I've done enough for today. :occasion14:

Well, you're proving you have patience. It's a good thing you had more of the walnut. It's time for this project to move forward with a finish, now. At least it can do that, now.

Either patience, or stubborness, I'm not sure which. I had wanted to inlay something on the back, but considering that this Limba seems haunted, I'm not so sure I should. Still have to drill for bridge, and jack mount. I just finished counter boring the neck screw holes for ferrules. And contoured the heel. Still have to put a tummy contour in it. Not going to do a forearm one. And still have to route for pickup/s, haven't decided on whether one neck or neck and bridge. Then drill the control holes. Then final sanding and sealing. Then I can freak out over the finish. Ohh Boy.
Heck, I'm almost done.(Sigh)
