Ignoring the fact that I have several ongoing incomplete builds, I’m plunging into another!
This will be a mix of Hendrix and Haggard, a cafeteria style selection of my favorite Strat and Teles elements into a single guitar.
The body is coming from Warmoth, which is a universal rout Hybrid Tele body in gloss Olympic White. Alder, 7/8” side jack.
Neck is coming from another supplier, and will be a right handed reverse CBS headstock neck. QSawn maple with a flat sawn rock maple veneer fretboard, and all the late 60s specs: 1 5/8” nut, 7-1/4” fretboard radius, 21 frets, heavily rolled fretboard edges, 50/50 split side markers, narrow 12th fret dot spacing, etc. The only place I’m veering off vintage here will be a proper bone nut, a modern heel adjust truss rod, and jumbo SS frets. Of course, some left handed “F” tuners will round out the CBS era styling.
The soul of this will be a set of Fralin Woodstock pickups in the neck and middle, with a reverse staggered Fralin Vintage Hot Tele bridge pickup. The bridge will be mounted in a left handed (reverse) slant too, and I’ve got a little trick up my sleeve I will reveal later once the pickguard gets here.
Being a fan of the Teles simple controls, I’ve devised a wiring scheme here that seems complex, involving a four pole 3 way super switch, two 250k pots, a pair of capacitors, and a SPDT on/on toggle. It’s actually quite simple, and works like this:
Position 1: Bridge (.0015 tone cap)
Position 2: Neck + Bridge OR Middle (.022 tone cap)
Position 3: Neck (.022 tone cap)
The toggle switch only affects position 2, and both the bridge and middle pups are identical in polarity and wind so theyre always humbucking combined with the RWRP neck.
Is the most versatile way to wire this combination of electronics? No, not by any means. In fact, it’s distilled down to only the sounds I use: Tele positions 1 and 2, and Strat positions 4 and 5. Could I have achieved this (and more) with a Freeway or push pull? Sure, but no thanks. Not for this build. I want this thing to have a bit of a temper, and a few quirks… yknow, personality.
Finally, the pièce de résistance, the Wudtone Chimemaster trem:

As far as timeline goes. body is on order for sometime this summer, neck should be here in a few weeks, and I’ll have a pickguard here in a week or so to get all the wiring sorted out.
