A new prospect.

As we continue in our series on the effects of human senility on wood, we find that the top has been glued on and trimmed to the sides. I received some excellent  suggestions on different types of sound holes, and appreciate them all. I decided to try a variation on the traditional f-hole. Still working on it and not sure if I like it or not. I can always turn it into something else at this point so we'll see. The process continues:

I spent a couple years working with old Swiss Screw machines, so I can understand just what you mean. :headbang:

love this!

Love the idea of a hollowbody but I hate the shape of an F hole.

I'm not a big fan of the traditional shape either, that's why I wanted to do something unusual. I wanted to keep the sound hole to show the fact that it's a hollow body, but do to my experiences in grade school I have this strong dislike of the letter F for some reason. :dontknow:

Success! Excellent fit, centered properly, and the right angle between 2.2 and 2.3 degrees.  I are most happy camper. :headbang: :headbang:

New toy to make things easier.

Wen Model 4214 12'', variable speed 580-3200, 5/8 chuck, 3 1/8 spindle travel, plenty deep enough to do bodies, 9 1/2" square table with side extension. Laser sight and LED work light. Have already checked it and it travels straight through the whole spindle travel. Run out is also excellent. $250. semolians from the Bezos Bazaar. Anything that would be better is too close to, or over 4 digits on the price. Too much for my humble purse. This should do what I need well enough. I am currently setting it up to do the neck screw holes on the body.

That's what I thought when I first saw it. I no longer have all the machinery and tooling that I used to use in the past. So I'm having to slowly rebuild a shop. And I'm sure I don't have to tell you how much setting up costs. :headbang1:
One step at a time... :headbang:

The most useful accessory I've got for my press is an X/Y crossvise, similar to this...

They're generally not too expensive (that one is $60 here), but invaluable for working on necks in particular.

Thanks for the suggestion, I totally agree. Something like that is what I had in mind for the second accessory I get for it. The first being the set of sanding drums I got at the same time as the press. They'll do fine until I can get a proper spindle sander. :icon_thumright:

Yeah, I understand that. I'm still replacing things I let go of years ago.

Most usable. I have a two-way articulating table for mine.

Greetings Folks, Norm Abram here with a special episode of "This Old Grouch". Today we visit Master Wood Butcher PhilHill, as he takes us on a fascinating ride along in his slow decent into madness, should be fun. Now here's Phil:

Thanks Norm, I think. Anyway today we discover that a home made control cavity template works just as good as an expensive one. And, that the nice thing about a semi hollow body is that the whole treble side is, in effect one big control cavity. Now I have to decide whether to go with a black plastic cover, or try to find some mahogany veneer that matches the body reasonably well. The pressure is mounting.... :cool01: :rock-on:

Thank you, I'm happy so far. Don't want to get over confident though, we all know what happens then.

Don't we just.

Well I have some hog veneer arriving any day now as you know so you'll be able to see by my success / balls up whether its a good idea to pursue.

I'll be watching. I found some, but it won't get here till next week. Then I get to see if it's actually the color they showed and if it'll come close to matching. Good Luck on yours. :headbang:
