Tele-a-thon

Thanks Bagman!

ZionWarmoth - if I can't work on em, I'll hoard em for when I'm retired. I figure it's a good investment regardless.  :icon_biggrin:

From frustration / disappointment is born the urge to create, and so I did.  :party07:

Turned the palletcaster blanks into these:

Thrilled really. Still wondering if I'll fill the voids...

And the cherry blank into this:

Skuse my dust. The flashy sticker on the pickguard is playing havoc with the color balance...

A little frustrated with my blank preparation - could not center the guitar on the middle board of the blank... I hope it won't be too obvious in the finished product.

I think I'm going to try a VERY subtle grey / brown burst on the edges, and pre-treating with ammonia fumes... we'll see. This is the most work I've been able to put in for ages! It's great to be post-call without having stayed up all night.

Tools were set up, so I went ahead and cut / routed the wenge and 1pc walnut tele bodies.

You can see sapwood and the router-sled-planer marks on the walnut one.

This is raw off the router. Really no tearout on the walnut, cherry or pallet casters - I think the trick is a combination of cutting close to the line when you're parallel to the grain, slow but constant rate of feed, and a sharp stable bit. I don't sand, and wish I had a spiral trim bit...

The wenge had some moderate tearout (more like splintering - it's completely unlike any other wood.) Only on the outside of the lower bout, and nothing a bit of sanding can't fix - it won't show.

+1 on the Wenge. I'll bet that grain would really reveal some interesting lines if it were cut more, such as an oversize (for a Tele) edge round-over, and perhaps a forearm and tummy cut. Look what happens to this Kingwood when the grain gets angular cuts through it...

Cagey, are you suggesting I scallop my tele?  :icon_biggrin:

Maybe as a novel weight reduction technique.

I agree - I'd love to show off that grain, but I want to keep it clean.

I've been mulling over doing a large radius on the whole width of the guitar. I don't know...

It is a heavy monster.

I think it would be an interesting effect. Maybe you could try it on some scrap left from cutting out the body. See how it reveals on that.

At it again today - I think it's the only upside to un-busy call: you get to do so much the next day.

Made a neck pocket template, since no one has anything good to say about StewMac's

Freehanded the contour with the 1/2" collet router bit... got lucky.

Cut and glued the Koa. Too bad - the spalt was really nice! Never knew what hit it.

Made the template for my brother's soloist. He wants a hardtail now... I'm confused.

No tearout,  a little burning. But I was an idiot and didn't keep it flat on the table... Live and learn. Could have been worse.

End result - color is a bit off...

Last post for today.

More next week.

Liberated the koa from the clamps, and gave it a scraping and a bath.

This is what I had planned for the koa - except the PRS SE One contour (Montag, not my koa):

My dad says he wants 2 pickups (ARGHS!) Disagree...

My koa, Kisekae:

Also wondered about putting a tele neck pickup in the neck position - maybe a little less obtrusive...

Thoughts?

Just finished this today - took me 1 more day than I'd hoped.

Oak breakfast bar, serving window and shelving.
