Tele-a-thon

Personally, I hate the Jackson headstock ... I think it's one of the ugliest and dumbest looking things out there, so that makes me absolutely ZERO help because I am so subjective as to be disreputable!  :icon_biggrin:

That said, I love the Bigsby.

But I don't think it belongs neither on a Soloist nor with that absurd Jackson stock, so I'd either give your brother a Shred Machine complete with Floyd and all the silly, pointy headstock he can handle ... or give him a nice contoured Tele body with that Bigsby ... and that Strat headstock.

I'd be much happier with the latter.

i bet money even if you don't like the Jackson headstock, you'd live with this one... :icon_biggrin:

And yes, it's mine... :laughing7:

I'd willingly sacrifice myself for the good of the forum to live with that mostly rotten pointy headed monstrosity. For the good of the forum, of course. As for being disreputable, I think it's more entertaining than the opposite - and therefore two thumbs up.

And on that note, some levity:

The neck on the soloist simulation is purely me being lazy - I hate it as is - would prolly do something like Afterburner - hard to beat.
And I've decided to make both a "nice rounded tele" and a soloist + floyd for my brother, his desires be damned.

Doug ... of course that's yours! Someone else could have posted it and I'd have thought twice. I have to admit, she's pretty nice ... even with the Floyd and that damned headstock!

Just waiting for the bronze (oilite is the cheapest I could find) inserts and the set screws (stainless).
I have the tap.

Starting to look like something here.
Blew one out!
Set one on fire! (wenge rotating at 700rpm against maple apparently creates a wee bit of friction.)

These are the two that survived. I've given up on the maple and the padouk - not fancy enough. May try zebrawood (which I have) and try to get small pieces of other woods to make other knobs. What do you think I could sell these for once they're finished?

These guys get $18-$20 apiece for similar ones. If you can get one of the guys who write ad copy for the audiophile sites, you might $400-$500 each for them <grin>

LMII has a small selection for 3.50$, eBay also has 3 - 6$ a piece. Stewmac has ebony ones for like 4$ iirc. My per knob cost is around 3$ including tool amortisement of 1$. Are these sellable for 6$ ea? Even locally - would guitar centre sell something made by a local "artisan"?

Guitar Centers aren't "local" stores, per se. They draw from a central inventory/warehouse (or each other). So, you'd have to go to headquarters and get them to buy into the idea. Then, the local stores are more computer-controlled than anything else. Sales/profits are tracked and inventory is replenished based on that, I'm sure along with some local demographics info factored in. Accessories have some wild markups, so if you need $3, they'd have to be convinced they could get $8-$10. I'm sure they'd compare that to how many other knobs they sell and at what price, etc.

You'd be more likely to get independent stores to buy into the idea, but their idea of "buying into" it would probably be something along the lines of you consigning them inventory, and they'll see if they can sell it. If they do, you both win. If not, only you lose.

Guitar centre, not guitar center - local chain (albeit large) here in Calgary. The consignment option don't bother me - there's always eBay.

Bakers had it right - dozens are better with 13.

Cocobolo goodness. Sap included.

They're ever so slightly oversized for tele knobs: 7/8"D by 3/4"H.

Just wondering how big to drill them - 0.229" (#1 drill bit) is what's on W's site for split shaft pots. The 6mm pot I assume will have to be drilled a wee bit over sized to fit.

What's this McFly? You been holding out on us? What's all this sweet padooky-walnutty goodness then?

It's just the non marring jaws on the new 2x4 and MDF workbench I just completed, and gratuitous wood porn.
Would make a nice Paul though.

Don't have the inserts, set screws or selling point yet (the first 2 are in the mail x 100 - no thanks to McMaster Carr), but I'm going for broke.
Making a first batch of 100.

32 zebras
14 Wenge
9 Peru walnut
14 cocobolo
2 padouk
1 curly maple.

I'll make the rest to 100 out of cocobolo after I cut out the top for my dad's guitar. Or maybe Wenge. Or maybe I'll see if I can actually sell any of these.

Does this make me obsessed?

No, you're not obsessed. You just know that once the tool is set up, it's as easy to make a dozen of something as it is to make one.

Not ready yet. I'll post some pics when they're ready. They're just wood cylinders at this point. Waiting for the brass inserts, and set screws. I suspect I'll sell the for 6$ ea, but I'll have to add up my costs to figure that out. Consider 4 reserved for you though.

Just got the screws but not the inserts. Getting there. Having problems with getting the knobs perfectly square with maximal automation. I. E. Drill press or something.

Anyways, my wife gave me a 100$ "gift certificate" for guitar building junk. Any advice? Here are my choices:

1 of 6 warmoth necks I'll eventually need

1 hardware set from armadillo guitars

Parts from stewmac including a safe t planer, pickup kits, various hardware

Thoughts?
