There are many factors that determine the sound IMO the pickups mainly and of course what amp you are using. Now many people will say it's the wood of the neck, then the body. and what size and brand of strings you use. There are so many great pickups to choose from I would find the ones that are wound for the sound I'm looking for. To me the main thing  that makes a major difference to the tone is to wire the pots using vintage cloth covered wire then I take it one step farther is to use the wire that is insulated. Just my opinion. Good Luck with your choice.
