Raw-only necks

I saw one at a used car lot in the 90s.  It was there for a while.  Even then it didn't make sense to me.  Most other things on the road will rust without a finish on them.  This didn't need it, and they did it anyway.  Why even bother with that heavy ass crapola?  That was the only advantage of stainless I thought.  Now you have a heavier than it had to be body with paint on it.

:icon_scratch:  Anyone know this then ...
Can you get a headstock veneer on a Raw neck  ?  :ie Wenge / Ebony
So it (the headstock face) could just be painted in a solid colour to match the body.
Warmoth will do a headstock veneer on a raw neck by special order over the phone.  I currently have a wenge neck with a veneer on order.  The neck will be non-returnable due to the chance of chipping at the edge where the finish just stops.

OK I'm really lost now  :sad1:

Anyway I got a Reply from these Q's ...

Q 1)
If I get, a build to order Warmoth Pro Warmoth Neck in Raw  ie: Wenge / Ebony
Can I get a Veneer on the headstock, so it (the headstock face only) can be painted a solid colour to match the body ?
If so the cost as well please ?

Reply was ....
* We cannot paint just the pegface; the finish will chip around the edges.

Q 2)
Could you please tell me what grade of sanding the Raw necks are finished to.

Reply was ....
* We sand everything to 220.

The Neck sanding interests me. As all mine are smooth as .... you know what  :laughing7:
But ...
Seems like they could be even smoother  ..... yes / no  :dontknow:

Thoughts anyone ....

I'm not surprised at the peghead veneer/finish answer. I am surprised at the sanding grit. Based on the necks I've gotten, I would have called it 320, at least.

I'd give them a call just to be sure.  When I first asked in email I was told that they wouldn't do it so I mentioned that I had seen a few necks on the forum that had this done.  They looked into it and said they could do it after that.

For reference, it was DbU's Keanu and Last Triumph's neck that were recently done with this option.

Thanks Loomi  :headbang:  think I'll have a yarn to Rob this time. (think it may have been someone new that gave me reply)

Yep had seen those mentioned, thats why I thought it could be done.

:icon_jokercolor:  Cagey your slacking off a little  :laughing7:  ..... you had Last Triumph's neck in your hands.

Yeah, you're right. I forgot his had been done that way. In fact, I never got any good shots of it, but the way they they did the finish the quilted maple left a light line around the outside edge between the darker finished top and the rosewood. Real nice effect, sorta like a natural binding, but real thin. Very sharp.

It was a superfine neck, that's the main thing that stands out in my mind.

Suppose a solid colour would be the same then  :dontknow:

:icon_scratch: Think DBU's (like LT's) has a clear line or something.

So it seems it can be done, as a special order. GREAT !!

Thanks all.  :icon_thumright:

On going to higher grit sand paper than 220, I think the idea was it is diminishing returns.  Several woods won't sand to any greater smoothness after 220.  If they are oily woods, they kind of buff out with use.  I usually give the raw necks a rub down with an old piece of 320 to remove the sealer they put on them.  I am not fond of the sealers gumminess.  I know that some folks like to do the finishing on these things, what grit do you go to on the bodies before putting finish on?

The padouk neck on my Warmoth Strat is now 11 years old, been played countless hours, and is better than ever. No problems whatsoever, and the more it's played, the slicker it gets.

I have 2, one all Satine and the other Satine with Macasar-Ebony fretboard, I love them, never have a problem in 5 years.
