Ordering slabs of wood to be made into guitars/basses; questions

I'm going to be taking some slabs of wood to a luthier that I really respect and I want the actual wood to be a bit of a surprise, so I don't want to ask him what dimensions I should order the wood in.  Can some of you regulars suggest good sizes of wood, both for body blanks (J-style bass and LP-style carved top guitar) and for laminate tops?

You're probably going to HAVE to ask him, as he may have limitations as to what dimensions he can work with. If you're ordering slabs he may have a maximum dimension height-wise he can work with, for example.

Tell him you have a "friend" that needs the info as he's thinking about doing it.....
