Laminating Pickguard Material onto headstock

Beginning a new re-build.  Have an older parts-caster body that I've never found the right neck for.  Then pulled the trigger on a baritone conversion neck that I plan on finishing with Tru-Oil.  Then I saw a pic of Ry Cooder and his "Coodercaster".

What I'm interested in doing is laminating some pickguard material onto the headstock.  I've been thinking about bending, drilling, cutting, polishing... I think I have all that worked out.  Just wondering about attaching it.

Do I do the laminating before any of the other finish work?
Do I finish all but the front of the headstock, then laminate?
Do I finish everything, then scuff up the surface and bond to it?
And what to use for adhering? General wood glue?  Something more substantial like epoxy?
I'd love to just use 4 screws, but don't think it will look good.

Someone out there must have learned how not to do this, and I'd rather not learn the wrong way myself.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Sorry I missed this, I haven't been as active on the boards lately (and had no advice to give).

How did you end up doing the bend? That looks super sharp in the GOTM pics.
