Is It Overkill?

Guys, as you know I'm having a Frankenstein built. It will have a Floyd Rose with a locking nut. I'm considering going with locking tuners too. NOT for double protection or anything like that, just that the locking tuners are so much easier when it comes to changing strings. Pull through, lock, cut, done. Would there be any disadvantages to having locking tuners with a locking nut?

again, just for the convenience when changing strings

I reckon the only disadvantage would be cost, and to a negligible degree, weight.  Seems to me that having the strings securely anchored at the tuner posts with minimal wraps would allow you to stretch 'em real good before you clamp the locking nut down.

I think the weight from the locking tuners would be a problem, but if it isn't then go for it.

MY last build had locking tuners & they are HEAVY.

It's not overkill. I have locking tuners on my "Soloist" with a Floyd Rose and locking nut.

Sperzel locking tuners are quite light-weight.

If the weight really matters to you, I think the hipshot lockers are pretty light, as well - dunno about availability in Japan, but it'd be worth investigating.

I have PW locking tuners on my La Cabronita shredder and I will have them on my upcoming Soloist build too. It is just so much more convenient.

I really can't think on any type of solid bodied electric guitar where I wouldn't put PW locking tuners on.

Yeah, I've had locking tuners on my guitars for years, Schaller's. I love them. That's why I was wondering if there would be any problems using them with a locking nut. Up until now I've had them on 3 Strats, 3 Music Man Silhouettes, and a Les Paul.....yes, I switched out the tuners on my 35th Anniversary LP custom for Sperzel's. All of those guitars had regular nuts. I've grown so accustomed, when changing strings, to just pulling the string tight, locking, tuning, cutting that I don't think I'm prepared to have to wind strings again. My EVHMM gets neglected because of having to change the strings. Pure laziness on my part. haha!!

I've never had any issues with weight problems......on the guitar, not myself, I'm a fat slob.  :occasion14:

Not at all, I have the exact same setup on my Dave Murray strat. There's a little more weight to locking tuners, other than that...

HAhaha are you really discussing the weight of the tuners? It's not like the guitar is going to dimp down like a rock if he had some tuners weighting a ilttle more? :dontknow:

You are young to the board  :binkybaby: People discuss things that are way less important than this  :)

Yeah, the real issue here is the finish on those tuners. Because, you know, tone and stuff. :icon_biggrin:

I was going to go for a polyurethane with a touch of satin......and maybe have them sprayed in a reverse tobacco burst.

The "weight" is negligible.  My Soloist with Sperzels weighs 7 pounds, and a Soloist or Strat is not going to have neck-dive.

It's a non-issue, and I don't know why it would even be mentioned.

For those of us with shoulder back problems, the added weight makes a big difference.

On my strat, going from regular tuners to locking tuners added over a pound.

Something else must have happened when you did that.

I have a set of 6 Kluson Deluxe tuners in a bag with screws, bushings and washers. On my scale, they weigh 6.3 ounces, or 178 grams. I also have a set of 6 Schaller Mini-Lockers in a bag with screws, bushings and washers. They weigh 8.7 ounces, or 246 grams. So, replacing the cheapest, lightest, junkiest tuners extant with the most expensive, heaviest, best lockers would add 2.4 ounces to any guitar. Negligible, to say the least. Wearing a sweatshirt instead of a t-shirt would put more load on you.

You must have left a socket wrench or some locking pliers in your control cavity or something <grin>
