Instead of a raffle

Well, I like the sound of this idea (as you guys probably guessed  :laughing7:).
I've seen how the riff contest is done at the Seymour Duncan forums, and that looks like a good format for this. I know GoDrex is an honest guy in that contest, because when I asked which clip was his, he wouldn't tell me. We put trust into people into the raffle... we assigned someone to get the money, choose rules, assign numbers, and the first year, even someone to choose the number. This is an honest bunch here, and I think we could pull this off.

And this is a contest I may have a chance at. Some of you guys have put gorgeous guitars together I wouldn't have thought worked. Hannaugh's guitars are pretty ballsy, and we all know they work well. Yes, some people will have an edge, but that doesn't mean that they will win.

It's a contest the Seymour Duncan forums hold each year to find out who's the king of riffage or something. All entries are anonymous, and I think they ended it by letting people choose their favorites in order of 1, 2, and 3 or something.

The design contest seems like a good idea to me, and frankly, I'm not sure why some people are so opposed to it. I can't help but think that some of the people who are concerned about it being a popularity contest already have a list of people they won't vote for out of spite...

yay some positive input :hello2:

I think that would be cool too.  I probably wouldn't enter because my recording stuff is seriously lacking, and if I did, I probably wouldn't win cause I'm not that good, but it would still be a lot of fun in my opinion.

Well, just for fun, I'll put some old ideas I will not be using in the contest

Now I've got to think of something new!

The SD riff contest is a little different, because the only thing you won was bragging rights, and a chance to compete separately again other winners for the title of  "riffologist supremo."  The guy who was doing it had it going every month for a while, but then interest sort of waned and we weren't getting a lot of people voting. There were plenty of participants though. It might have been a much different thing if there was some sort of prize involved, but I can't say. BTW - I actually won the very first contest they held -  see? I get to brag, but that's it hehehe :laughing7:

Yeah I wouldn't tell Max who I was in the contest because I didn't want to screw up the integrity of the contest and be that guy.

Oh and thanks for the nice words Max - I'm definitely voting for you now.  :laughing7:

oy vey Max. I think some of the ideas behind those concepts are cool, but... That LesG needs a smaller pickguard or something

Positive input?  I thought we were having a discussion of pros and cons.  I'm not for a contest where I would have to submit an entry where the only chance I would have of winning would mean to submit a guitar that I thought could win, but wouldn't necessarily want to own.  Besides, I play majority bass.  I couldn't imagine mostly guitar players voting for a bass entry, not to mention I've never used photo shop and I've never seen a Kisekae Bass builder.  And for the record, I know we've had a bass win GOTM.  With a drawing, it's left to odds, impersonal but fair.  Odds don't care if you like hums or single coils, BK or Flamed Maple, Floyds or hardtails, basses or guitars.  As far as being impartial and anoymous, whether it's a bass or guitar would automatically give some of that away, barring the few members that build both.  How ever many tickets are sold vs. how many each entrant bought defines each one's odds of winning.  Plus, it's left to winner to decide what he wants to build, not what he designed to win a contest.

I think we should make a rule that the only people who can vote are the people participating with an entry.

Sorry to say - that doesn't make it much of a contest does it?

A panel of judges perhaps?

Probably not. I'd want me to win, for example. We should maybe have people volunteer in advance to judge, and that can include participants.

I dont think judges should be participants..... set a bad precedent, opens the door to uneasy tensions

judges should be totally impartial
