Excuse for latest build

Remember when I started with this ....  :laughing7:

:icon_scratch: ...  Well I think I need a new excuse  :dontknow:

Because .......

ROCK & ROLL  :guitarplayer2:
Done !!

Couldn't decide which hardware colour to use on this build.
So just for something completely different to anything else I've done or have..
I totally mixed up Chrome and Black hardware.
(you'll see what I mean)
Had a dud set of chrome tuners so I but those keys on the Black pegs with the black screws.
Did the same thing with Neck plate / Control Cover / Jackplate etc.
Has a Chrome Bridge plate with Black Saddles / screws / springs blar blar blar
Actually suits it much better with so much happening in all the wood work.

Post better pic's when I can put it down  :icon_biggrin:  ..... or when the sun decides to bloody come out

Very sexy to hold and play  :toothy10:

Those two tone staggered tuners are off da hook! What a great touch to a beautiful guitar.

Nice!

I found a lockwasher for a pot the other day, as well as 3 pickguard screws, so now I'm trying to figure out how best to keep from wasting that stuff. Mayfly's LP Jr. is making me crazy already, and it's nowhere near done. Or maybe a LPS. What would be wrong with one of those?

That is really nice Updown!! :hello2: I defintely like the mixed color hardware on it too!
Hope it sounds as good as it looks!  :guitarplayer2:

The black and chrome mix looks really classy. Good work.

I'm glad you posted about the pickup cavities. Funnily enough I had a roll of black tape nearby too, and couldn't resist trying a little prototype. Sure enough, a quick trip to get some paint later, and this was the result:

When the pups are in it looks killer.

Killer, Killer!! A great mate to that mahogany beauty of
yours...definitely one of the cooler BK bodies I've seen, and the neck speaks for itself, obviously.
Great stuff, great job.  :icon_thumright:

Awesome looking geetar you got there Murray...Looks like the sister to David's Lil' Miss Hot Rod... :headbang1:

Great thread and pics and I sort of had heart palpatations mentally projecting myself to a few weeks from now when my first complete build arrives.

Question on the pickup routes. On my order, the pickup routes are configured as follows:

Pickup Rout: (Tele® (Neck), None (Middle), Tele® (Bridge)

So I have been shopping for pups in a standard Tele replacement set configuration (smaller neck pickup with cover, etc). I want to get a proper fit on the pups for the route on the body.

So my question is -- what is "TXT" routing and how is that different from the way my guitar is configured? You mentioned in one of your posts that the pups you installed were not the ones the guitar was routed for -- in what way is that (specifically)?

I need to understand the routing types better and what they mean in terms of choosing pickups.

(I also need to understand pickup mounting methods better, direct to wood, using base plates or threaded inserts, but that is probably another thread)

The X means (Nil) NO pickup.  :icon_biggrin:

Mine on the showcase was routed as T (Tele) X (Nothing) T (Tele)
But I got it routed before painting as  S (Strat pup) S (Strat pup) T (Tele which was already done)

That other thing I mentioned was me unsure if I should have a rout like the EMG's have.  :dontknow:
I was using these shaped pups for N and M ...
http://www.warmoth.com/Duckbuckers-for-Strat-P1077C783.aspx
Which are not the same shape at the route. I mean they don't fill the bottom.
BUT I KNEW THAT !!
Where these do .... http://www.warmoth.com/Alnico-II-Pro-for-Strat-Staggered-P1104C783.aspx
I just painted the bottom ONLY in black of the pup routs.

So you got nothing to worry about, you got the right routs.
That's if your using Tele pups.

Heres the Pickup routing configurations ... http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Bodies/Options/PickupRoutingOptions.aspx

Yep theres threads on wood mounting pups.
I just used these #3358 ... http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardware,_parts/Electric_guitar:_Screws_springs/Pickup_Height_Screws.html

Thanks for that info. Still searching for my perfect pups (and rather enjoying it). Seems like I fixate on a different one every day -- today it is this:

http://www.guitarfetish.com/Calibrated-Pickup-Set-Modern-Vintage-Lil-Puncher-Import-Telecaster_p_150.html

Which may be overkill for my needs but they make a slightly toned down version that is identical appearance-wise. I'm finding that yes, looks matter in my choice of pups although I hate to admit it.

For whatever it's worth, I have yet to ever be disappointed with a GFS pickup. I haven't used that particular set, but I wouldn't hesitate to. The GFS parts are not knock-offs or of questionable construction. They're high quality parts. Besides, for what they cost, what's the risk? It's not like you're dropping $300+ on a set of Kinmans or something similar where they charge you by the word for glowing ad copy that reads like a sommelier's wet dream.

Haha, the Kinman ad copy is terrible. It's one of those websites where you feel like you're reading one side of an argument.

Preach it brother

Yeah, my pickup quest revealed a lot of boutique offerings that sound real good but just seemed over-priced, IMHO. My fair price point for a set of pups is < $150.00 (way less) and I am not cheap; that is just my sense of what I should pay.

I am going with the GFS Modern Vintage Lil Puncher set and a Toneshaper for double humbucker, with a 5 way for all the series/parallel/single-coil tapping non-hum cancelling goodness. It will be epic tone, I am sure.

Now that that is settled, I have about 6-8 weeks to stew over it. Maybe go focus on my hardwood stairs conversion project instead :)
