'Custom' bass pains & drilling on a painted body

So, Warmoth won't/can't/whatever drill controls beyond standard P/J-type set ups. They'll drill for the pickups I want (Bartolini BCs), but not for the wiring harness/preamp. That leads to interesting questions about what do you do when you order a bass with no drill-outs for controls, yet you'd like it painted and otherwise ready to go. Who has done this? How did it go?

Just drill. Put some painter's tape over the area you want to drill. Use a sharp drill bit. Drill your hole. Remove tape. Champfer the hole. You now have a hole where you want it, and can put whatever you want into the hole.
