The eagle has landed. After close inspection everything *seems* to be in order. My only concern is that the neck looks like it doesn't have a finish on it. I got the satin finish same as my last build but my previous neck is all nice and shiny. Maybe that happened from playing it?!?! Anyway, won't know for sure until I get some strings on it and do some bends to see if it flakes. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, after closer inspection it really seems as if there is no finish on this neck. It's on the work order. I'll contact them about this tomorrow morning and see what they say. I sure hope if it's a miss that they're going to pay for shipping both ways.

difficult to imagine they missed finishing it though

Hey about the finish. I just got a neck in the mail yesterday and I thought the same thing, that they forgot to put the finish on. I called them and they said if it has a red sticker on the heel that it has one on there. He told me it was a light finish and it would shine up with use. Well I put it on my guitar and played it for a couple hours and it looks like might be shining up a little, But I definitely know it has a finish cause it keeps scraping of the frets as i play getting everywhere( it's a one-piece maple so the fretboard is finished too) I got a neck 6 months ago with a satin nitro and when I got it I could tell right off the bat it had been finished. Currently it is pretty shiny, but it seems like it was always like that to me. They must be using a different finish and/or process now. It looks great and I hope it holds up though. Best wishes!!!!

Oh yeah. Your guitar is cool. I like the figure on the fretboard. It matches with the Korina binding real well. Way to go dude :headbang:

Hey, thanks for that. Yeah, there is a red sticker on the heel. So tell me, in your post you said

"it's a one piece maple so the fretboard is finished too."

Does that mean they don't finish the fingerboard if it's ebony? My frets definitely do not have any finish on them. I scraped them a little and they aren't flaking at all. I remember with my last 2 builds that both of them flaked real easily. SS frets so I'm not worried about putting scratches on them.

When my neck arrived i checked the finish by comparing the neck and the tuner holes, try it.

my LP neck was a BE maple and ebony, it had no sheen on it until i began playing for a couple days, then it started looking like a gloss. but the shine only appears on areas you play more. this is about the back of the neck, the ebony is one of the woods that done need a finish.

Yeah, my first build was a birdseye/birdseye neck with the satin finish and I remember when it got here it had that satin finish look to it. Now, a year later, the entire neck is really shiney. Beautiful neck.

dmraco, thanks for the info on not finishing the ebony.

DoubleG, yeah, that's what I did, checked the neck vs the key holes. My eyes must be getting old because I can't tell. hahaha!! .........just pulled it over here and checked again, yeah, it's got a finish on it, it's just real thin. The back of the neck is extremely smooth. They would have had to have sanded it with 2000grit sandpaper to get it like that. It's not raw wood.

Yeah when I took my satin finished neck to my local luthier he asked me why I hadn't finished it yet.

I love the look of that ebony btw.

Looks like its going to turn out crazy nice. I think its probably one of the coolest looking fretboards I've ever seen as well.

you should call this THOR cause the streak looks like a cool lightning bolt....

I like the name Thor too! What's with the new crappy shipping box for the necks? Mine arrived fine, but it was flopping around in the box the whole time during shipping. That could cause problems...

Sorry, fellas, "Thor" isn't gonna work out this time around. Mrs. MULLY sat here by my side while I was choosing everything and she even helped pick out some parts. I've decided to name this one "Tomoko" which is my wife's first name. I've already had the neck plate made up and it's on its way to Japan as I type. Those are the Japanese characters for her name. It's going to be a surprise.

Sorry, I don't have a photo of the neck plate without the rust protectant on it. hehe!! (hint hint)

Thor would be more like Pee Wee Herman compared to her when she gets pissed :toothy12:

HOLY CRAP!!! I was putting the trem studs in and they were a bit snug. I didn't think they were unusually tight though. Anyway, I was using a rubber hammer to tap them down and when I did the one on the right it cracked the finish a little around the hole, no biggie because it's totally not visible with the trem and scratch plate on, but when I turned it over the wood was split a little in the trem cavity. I don't think it's going to be a problem but, man!!! DAMMIT!!!!
MULLY

what do some of you old pros think? Is this going to be a problem?
