Witness Lines & Wipe -on Poly

One or two thin coats on top should make them dissappear.  Use thinned coats of whatever you originally used and wipe them on super thin - thin to the point of just barely dampening the surface. Witness lines are like the grain lines of wood.  When you lay down a finish - any finish - it is...

    How/where to install a Kahler?

The stud mount version (2200 series) does not require a route, the 'flat mount' (2300) version does need a special route for the springs.

    How/where to install a Kahler?

Warmoth used to offer the option of routing for a kahler flat mount.  You might want to call them and see if it is still available as a custom option...

    Should I finish it myself?

As others have noted, finishing the neck is quite easy - multiple thin coats of tru-oil.  You can do that in the kitchen if need be. The body is a little bit more involved.  Firstly, if you want a smooth surface to your final finish then you will need to grain fill the ash.  It's really not a...

Finishing masters, guide me through my crash course!!!!!!!

Not one of the resident experts, but... Nice dye job. If you've sealed off the top you can try adding a burst around the edge with your black.  From what is visible in the pic you don't need a burst.  If you are confident you can get a crisp line between the dyed top and the black painted back...

Maybe my alcohol based dye is pulling out some of my waterbased grain filler?

Is the filler suposed to be compatible with alcohol based dyes/finishes?  You could put a smear of filler on some sort of non-porous surface, allow it to dry then see if it is affected by a wipe down with straight alcohol.  You'll probably want to figure this out before proceding otherwise you...

What would happen if I sanded lacquer before it fully cured?

Just spray a piece of scrap material (or two) that way you can experiment without fouling up any of the guitar. When the finish is not properly cured the abrasive doesn't so much cut the surface, instead it sort of smears it.  But on the plus side acrylics tend to cure rather rapidly, since...

Photographic Images under Lacquer? Is this Possible?

Reading through that strat thread he says "I used Mod Podge decoupage solution to affix the paper with, and I also put one coat on top to seal it ( if I had it to do over again I'd prolly put 2 coats to make sure the oils based poly didn't seep through at all, Live and learn)" So it sounds like...

Photographic Images under Lacquer? Is this Possible?

I doubt there is a single 'definitive' resource as the exact procedure is going to vary depending on the exact material used.  But in general you will need to laminate the photo/printed item securely to the surface, possibly seal the photo item (if the intended topcoat might cause the photo...

tips on buffing a mirror finish

I've used them.  You can use pretty much any grade of polishing compound, but should use a different pad for each grade. Overall they are ok,  but will never give you the same results as a real buffing wheel.  High speed buffers generate friction/heat much faster allowing you to slightly melt...

any tips for dulling down a glossy polyester neck finish?

Superfine steel wool is an option (tape off the pickup magnets - that stuff always seems to find them.)  Other options include wet sanding with fine grade sandpapers or micro-mesh finishing pads (stew mac sells those.)  Synthetic steel wools (garnet or grey) work pretty much like standard steel...

How much $ to make a pickup?

Depends on what the parts are.  Basic wire and stuff, sure that's cheap, but pickup covers or other items that require special tooling can get pretty spendy - at least when you consider they are up front costs with little guarantee of a return should the product line be a flop.  Then there is...

    Tips for finishing in Florida

The release of pressure from rattle cans causes the temperature of the aerosol to drop, in a humid environment the aerosol will then collect moisture from the air - this is how blushing occurs.  Warming the cans in a water bath just prior to spraying can reduce this problem. Good ventilation is...

Finishing a neck with CA Glue?

I'm interested.  I've used it as grain filler on some other woodworking projects, and have done full finishing on some small test pieces.  But I've never actually done an entire neck with CA, so was hesitant to comment sooner. What product(s) did you use?

    Noob question about neck joints...

Neck through would be ideal, long tenon at the very least. Stew Mac sells a thru body guitar neck.  All you'd need to do is glue on the body wings and shape the headstock. On the downside it is a tilt back headstock and I'm not sure if the scale length is correct...
