So, I couldn't help myself from picking this one out of the showcase.

Body:
Swamp Ash, 2 piece, 3.5 lbs

Neck:
Birdseye maple
'59 contour, re-tapered to a sort of offset V, with heavily rolled edges.

Clean and simple on this one.  Black body, tortoise PG, yellow tint on the neck, chrome all around.
Haven't decided on the pickups yet, but not the Fenders.
Perhaps like a Jimmy Paige setup, it's got the knobs.

James

Yea, I do hear what you guys are saying.

There is the same body in a one piece still in the showcase, that would lend itself to a burst beautifully.
I chose the two piece since the plan was black from the get go.

YAY BLACK!

Cool guit! That's the larger headstock, right? It balances well with the body. Black and Tortise will look really classy.  :icon_thumright:

Those are GFS lipstick hums right?  If anyone ends up using some I want a review!  I'm working on a project from scratch to emulate a mid 90's Talman and was thinking of using some of those!  Nice Ash!!

I'm strongly interested.
I like the 4 conductor, plenty of splitting options, thing.
I kind of do want something of the chrome variety in there.

I have enough guitars at this point, where I'm looking for things that are a bit unique or unusual.

I am also wondering why they are so inexpensive.
Not that I would feel better about paying more for a logo, but a lot of boutique's are 2x the price.

Yea, I do believe those are the GFS lipsticks.
It's the same picture at least.

If you are talking about GFS pickups and why they are so inexpensive, I think it is largely because they are designed in the USA but made overseas.  I have/had several sets and find them to be decent.  Once you realize that they are not going to sound like Jason Lollars or Joe Bardens it's pretty easy to justify the difference in cost...

Yes they are GFS lipsticks. They most likley aren't going to sound as good as let's say some custom SD lipstick hums or some Lollers, but for half the price I bet they still make noise. I have a set of their hot hex hum's and they sound just as good as some of my Dimarzio's. Not quite as good on the gain, but the attack and punch is good. Im thinking of getting a set of the lipsticks just to try them out... :dontknow:

They are on the website now for $40.00 each, $80.00 total.
They would be much less than I had budgeted.

I like the lipstick humbucker idea though.
Perhaps some Lollars if they make them.

Thanks,
James

OK, follow-up to that last comment.
Short of special order, I don't see anyone else making a lipstick humbucker.
Anyone know of anything other than GFS?

I had a Tele Deluxe once.  Got it used in the late 70's for $200.

It was a real bas'it-kase.  Had been BRUSH painted black over factory candy apple red, which was over factory sunburst.  Fender would fill orders for solid color "custom color" guitars by taking what they had and doing an overspray on them.  I decided to strip it down.  It was an alder body, maple neck, otherwise stock.  Having little means to accomplish any real work - barely making ends meet - I sanded it all with a borrowed finish sander, then did all the contours by hand.  Got it down to 220, then 320.  Getting the old paint off was a task - this was paint on enamel  over two different expoy-poly coats.  Got it done tho.  After that, all I could do was Kiwi Brown.  Yup.  Brown shoe polish.  Took that white alder and made it a nice gumshoe brown.  After a while I put some dings and stuffi in the wood.  More Kiwi.  It had dark streaks and dark dents where the polish wanted to fill the voids.  Ended up with a lot of that on the back of it, around the edges and such.  I hated the pickups - original Fender type.  Not HB toned enough for me.  But it played well, and I sold it back to the same shop, a few years later... maybe 82-83ish, for $300.  They had no idea it was the same guitar until I told them (but not about the Kiwi finish).

One of these days, another Deluxe....
