Wear & Tear on Vintage Tint Satin Necks

I'm considering going with the vintage tint satin finish on the neck for my blue tele build.  I'm wondering though, over time, how does the tint hold up?  I understand the tint is shot onto a layer of clear, not on the wood itself.  Over time, I wonder if the tint will wear off in spots gradually, revealing the lighter colored natural wood underneath.  It seems it would look like a relic in reverse, with the scrapes and wear spots looking newer than the aged tint of the neck overall.

Does anyone have a vintage tint satin finish neck they've had for awhile?  How does it look?  Does it age nicely, of should I stick with a clear finish?

When you wear it off... the smutz from your hand will darken the wood nicely into that mojo effect... don't lose sleep over it, its a good thing.

Wait, there is a tinted coat over clear?

I thought there was no clear coat on tinted necks?

I have a Vintage Tint Satin neck finish on Maple.  You hit the nail on the head.  I've had it a year and a half, and coincidentally it has been my most gigged with instrument I've ever owned.  I say that because it seems gigging puts on more wear than practice.  My thumb has started to wear a spot in the finish where played most.  My wife is out of town with the camera or I'd post a pick.  However there's no guarantee it would show up.  It's only visible in certain light at certain angles, for now.  One thing to consider, the Warmoth Satin finish doesn't stay Satin for very long.  The back of the neck is completely glossy with the headstock being the only Satin area.  And yes, it is relic in reverse.  The worn spot is lighter but eventually that will wear into that finish and turn darker.  Like =CB= said, it's nothing to sweat and I wouldn't change a thing.  If it makes a difference, their Satin neck finishes are Nitrocellulose, therefore thinner and non-UV protectant.  They should age nicely.

The satin finish on my older goncalo neck went glossy... right away.  It takes very little time for that to happen.

So my pinkie wouldn't get splinters.......

Because, at the time, I wanted a gloss headstock front.  W did the finish and wouldn't do just a headstock front, so... I did the whole thing satin and had them buff out the front.

I can assure you, The vintage tint Warmoth applies is through to the wood sealer... It will not wear away.. as you have asked about.

I thought I was the only one here who had dared to finish Goncalo?  :blob7:

(But my epoxy coat for durability is quite different from just a satin or poly spray like on Maple, and mine is only a fingerboard, not a neckback, so it's not as sacrilegious.)

Translated as... "I committed a heinous crime but CB's is worse, so you should probably burn him first."

Sunny day here and time to kill.  This thread was in the back of my mind.  It may be a little hard to see.  The wear on this Vintage Tint Satin neck is lighter where the wear is.  It can be seen starting around the 2nd fret, strongest between the 3rd through 5th, then tapering off.

So... if I'm understanding what I'm reading, the satin vintage tint has worn through to the clear gloss, but not yet to the maple itself. Once you wear through the clear gloss, the maple will start to darken from hand schmutz, yes?

I don't think they put the Vintage Tint on top of a clear gloss.  It has Vintage Tint with Satin finish (which is Nitro) instead of a clear gloss.  It's worn through the Vintage Tint to the Maple which is dipped in a sealant.  It has to wear through that.

Ah. Ok. That would have the same effect. Not to mention make more sense <grin>

With anything, results may vary.  This bass is my main one.  It's get played the most, mainly in gigging situations for hours at a time atleast twice a week.  To top it off, I work with my hands for day job, so they're rougher than the average bear's, and it took 2 years to get it that way.

Thanks for the photos STD Custom.  Exactly as you described it.  Looks good to me with the wear and all.

I think I was obsessing over a tiny detail.
