Well, it's a "more metal?" or "more wood?" question. I have always preferred a clean, clear tone (as a basis for destroying it further down the chain) so I have to vote "MORE METAL" - modern. Of course I also play pedal steel guitar, and "the one I wish I had back" was a Travis Bean, and I find low-down-dirty blues dull as M'ssippi mud, so may not be an impartial source - I hope not, at least. I consider good tone to be largely subtractive rather than additive, and I'd rather pump bass, mids and highs out of the guitar and remove them selectively, rather than start with less highs to begin with. However, I am told that a few or several people have had success in sounding OK with single truss rods.... ahem.
