Warmoth nitro satin - will it buff to a gloss?

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to look.

I'm about to purchase an all maple neck from them but I'm torn between a vintage tint poly gloss or nitro satin.

Has anyone buffed warmoth's satin to a gloss before? Or does the nitro contain elements that make this impossible?.. I've read that the back of satin necks becomes glossy after a while with wear anyway? I would be looking to do the whole neck and fretboard.

I'm not partial to either comfort wise, but aesthetically its a vintage tele and I'm weary of an overly plastic looking neck but also a dull matte finish that doesn't look the vintage part.

Any help or alternatives appreciated. Cheers

Each of my satin nitro warmoth necks have buffed to a gloss from playing.  This is actually annoying for me  :)

I'm sure the entire neck could be buffed out, just from my experience - but I have not tried it.

Best nick ever Goodbye Pork Pie! :laughing7: There is a obscure meaning or just for fun??

You should send a email to warmoth with this question, I can't remember someone getting nitro finish glossy from warmoth... I *guess* that wouldn't be a problem, but I'm not a employee...

Charles Mingus reference....

Thanks guys.
I guess my reasoning is I would rather be able to buff a thin nitro satin finish to gloss, than sand a thick poly finish to satin if it's possible.
Would it be unusual for a satin nitro finish not to gloss with a buff?

I know extremely little about finishes but my understandment is that you buff ALL finishes to it become glossy...

Since you're going for the natural vintage look i say go with the satin. It'll gloss only where you play and look more natural

Don't try to de-gloss a gloss poly neck. Just get the satin and some buffing gear and go to town. It won't be too hard and you can control the amount of gloss.

I'm wondering if the old goncalo neck I've got in satin was nitro...its from 13 years ago.  Whatever, its buffed out real nice  on the  back, and you can see the fretboard glossies too - every place you play

Warmoth doesn't offer nitro cellulous; only poly.
Wrong.

Satin nitro.

are we sure about this?  I just check the site and it states neither nitro or poly...just gloss or satin.  I find it unusually that they would finish a body in poly and a neck in nitro...but hey...I have been wrong before.

I emailed Warmoth about this when my neck was on order and they replied that it was Nitro Satin.

The website says is nitro.

Clear Gloss
This is the usual neck finish, crystal clear, wet looking and very shiny.

Vintage Tint
This is the addition of an amber tint to make the neck appear aged. This is not a relic type finish, just a tinted color.

Satin Finish
Our Satin finish is a nitrocellulose lacquer
; highly sought after by vintage guitar purists. It has no gloss or shiny look to it; the appearance is dull or matte. This is a more functional type finish which is appreciated by some for its faster, slicker feel.

Matching Neck and Body Colors
We can match transparent colors, solid colors, dyes and bursts only when we spray the body and the neck at the same time. We cannot match a new finish to a pre-existing finish. The body and neck must be the same woods to match their finishes. Dye or burst peghead finishes require a figured maple pegface veneer and a matching body being finished at the same time. Please be advised that: We do not have nor do we apply Fender decals or any other decal "in the traditional name place" of Fender pegheads.

that is where I was confused...SATIN IS NITRO...

I guess this makes the gloss poly?

Technically, no. My car is grey, for example. That does not make your car blue. Satin being nitro does not make gloss poly.
But gloss is poly anyways.  :laughing7:
