Ugly Production Guitars

I think the headstock is genius, the shape  and the bridge as well.

What is genius about it?? It looks like whoever cut it made a mistake and decided to cut the mistake out!

My daughter could do a better job than that and she's not even as big as a guitar!

I'll stick my neck out.... there's no such thing as a truly ugly guitar.

I've never thought SGs were in anyway attractive but I can appreciate the form as something that, functionally at least, makes a lot of sense.  When I bought my first expensive guitar (in the early 90's), I sat in the same room with a Hamer Diablo and a Starfield Altair USA - I opted for the prettier Starfield and even though the Hamer looks uglier now than it ever did, It's still really cool.

I'm sure though that the Zacc Wylde guitar and the Gibbo Dusk Tiger have absolutely tonnes of "function" though because the way they look makes me want to vomit! :)

well not one to get much into forum debates....

... your daughter could do a better job and she is not as big as a guitar?  i think those two things would be mutually exclusive. Perhaps she could draw a shape YOU like better. fine. I would prefer that Paul Languedoc made my headstock to your daughter.

You got right into that one... maybe a bit too much :icon_scratch:

well not one to get much into forum debates....i think you are referring to the headstock when you say it looks like a mistake cut out. (??)  what i think is genius about it is that the designer clearly was looking to make a 6 on one side headstock that didn't look too fender-y or curvy.  That little "mistake cutout" area  ...in a kind of brilliant way....gives the upper and lower portions the appearance of a modern instrument peghead while only introducing that simple little C-cut to a triangle.  I guess its just appealing to me.  As far as the rest of the design that i think is genius, well if i have to explain it then perhaps we'll just agree to disagree on aesthetics! My tastes are  broad....from JEM's and Bich's to L-5's and  Super 400's  and all in between  ....i like lots of styles.

so your daughter could do a better job and she is not as big as a guitar?  i think those two things would be mutually exclusive. Perhaps she could draw a shape YOU like better. fine. I would prefer that Paul Languedoc made my headstock to your daughter.

Merr, I am guessing that you are a fish phan?  All things aside about their phans and the scene that follows them, I just think their music sucks.  And I have seen them live..... So I know what I'm saying here.  They just never 'did it' for me.  Don't like Trey's guitar tone, nor his voice.  Or their songs.  Just a really bad band if you ask me.  So that guitar represents to me a really bad time.

Jerry and the boys on the other hand................  Well, it's 15 years post Garcia, and how many WGD's do you see on the forum?  Lots.  How many Trey tributes or replicas do you see?  Not so many!  What will Fish's legacy be 15 years after they are done?  Will there be countless 'tribute' bands that play whole fish shows?  Only time will tell, but I'm guessing that Fish will go the way of Hootie and the Blowfish, or maybe Toad the Wet Sprocket.  You know, you'll find a Fish tape in the $0.99 rack at an off the interstate truck stop or something.  I seriously doubt it if they will have the lasting impact that the Grateful Dead have.

can I say that I still really like how this guitar looks? its probably the only BC Rich I find attractive.

Mmmmm Warlocks.

dude i bet few people on this forum could build a fully hollow asymetric bout axe (all due respect to kick ass warmoth builders here and those who could !!)     Carve many ebony tailpieces or bridges lately?  Create any arch tops lately?  Run binding in any F-holes lately??!!!!!  Totally not about Phish here...i am more a fan of that guitar than i am the band.  And anyone, like yourself with a ground level working knowledge of the Dead and Phish wouldn't really need to compare Trey and Jerry or say who is better. You don't like them and want to trash em in a forum, fine i can understand the Dude hating the Eagles / bad day analogy. all fun.

Also, i like both bands but LOTS of early Dead is fricking nearly impossible to listen to aside from 1 out of every 5 songs being a kickass Pigpen jam.   Also, the guitars people build from Warmoth WGD's are..with all due respect to Warmoth (who i worship) are far cries from being replica's of Jerry's axes in about 50 details...start with the electronics alone.   You are right maybe there are enough Jerry fans out there that people will take up guitar making to the extent they can build dumbed down Rosebuds and Lightning Bolts....but a solid body Languedoc...  I think its been shown by various PRS models that there is a HUGE market for dumbed down Languedocs. Also, Languedoc is still in business wheras Doug Irwin is no longer with us.  Good times ! more ugly ass guitars please!!!!!

Well, Merr......  At least you didn't take what I had to say all serious and stuff like it can get on here sometimes.  You are right on many aspects of your post, so much so that I'm not going to argue one single point........Tonight..........  Yes you are right on with the Warmoth WGD's bieng a far cry from anything that Doug put out over the years.  I never set out to do a replica of any of Jerry's guitars.  I only wanted the shape so those that know get it.  Mine, does however, have an effects loop in it!  Still trying to decide on what kind of buffer to put into it, but for now, I run one of Jerry's earliest FX loops with no preamp or buffer for the moment.  I built my WGD as sort of a good nod to Doug Irwin and Jerry more than trying to do a copy or replica.  All in fun man, that's the spirit.....  Wanna trade tapes sometime?  :occasion14:

BTW....... Is Doug Irwin dead?  I have been trying to find that out all day..... and I can't find out if he's still kicking or if he is the builder to the stars in rock n roll heaven?  I was under the impression that he was still alive, but in terrible health.

wow i can't believe yours has an effects loop in it that's awesome. Very much in the tradition.  Sorry i forgot that recent WGD was yours. I think that thing is absolutely beautiful and an awesome nod to those guys and their spirit. Truly an awesome guitar you made man .  And yeah who, especially those in the know, would not want an axe in that shape?  Oops Doug Irwin may not be dead. My B. /apologies. Tape trading sure, but i prefer Dead studio albums.

I don't think anybody was trying to make those attractive; they were simply trying to make the shortest full-scale guitar they could reasonably get away with.

The PRS with the Ninja Turtles was made for Dan Spitz of Anthrax (note his name on headstock).

Better him than me.

Though I confess, I always kinda liked the Dean Cadillac (?), the Les Paul/Explorer hybrid.

I actually really like it.

Give it a proper bridge pickup, a Floyd and some inlays and get rid of that random knob by the lower horn and your in business!

ALL HIPPIE JAM BANDS SUCK!! Hey do you know how to get a hippie pregnant?

Totally right, all hippie jam bands suck.  That's why I listen to the Grateful Dead...... they weren't a 'hippie jam band'  :icon_thumright:  I will go round in circles with you all week on this subject Pabloman  :icon_tongue: all in good fun  :toothy12:

I don't know, how do you get a hippie pregnant?  Is it different than the standard way?
