Proof that Gibson needs to get their shiznit together....

So when you thought Page was playing that on a Gibson, it was rigged?  When you found out it was a Tele, Gibson needs to get their shiznit together?    :icon_scratch:

I suppose my humor missed the mark... Again.... :icon_jokercolor:
Since I've done enough hijacking... I'll throw in Rush's "The Camera Eye"....
Not just Lifeson's solo, but the bass playing underneath it as well....

I quite like these solos:

Warning - Black Sabbath (more or less the whole song)
Dust my Broom - Canned Heat
Gimme' Shelter - Stones

I think Purple Rain's solo is in the perfect spot.

Also, not gonna lie, it needed more SRV. Anybody who can solo like him is lying.

There are very few guitarists I can correctly guess in a blind test, SRV and Peter Green are the only ones I can think of at the moment.

I'm a fan of the obscure ones - "Hello Jeff" - maybe, just possibly, Jeff Beck's greatest ROCK AND ROLL solo ever, on a Stanley Clarke album?! Kinda hard to fault "Nadia", "Where Were You" etc. But those are songs, not solos? Just about any Steve Morse solo off of "Southern Steel" or "Coast to Coast" will munch anything on the top fifty, but they're all composed - as were the solos in "All Along the Watchtower" and "Freebird." Jerry Garcia uncorks a pile of great ones on "Dick's Pick's 10", if you like improvised....

It's of course an impossible idea - do you rank gamechangers., or just "best?" Most any solo Julien Kasper or Oz Noy rips will top the best of Hendrix and 9/10ths of Jeff Beck, but those guys would be the first to tell you how much they owe to the pioneers. If I had to choose it'd be "Abyssina" from Kasper and "Twice in a While" from Noy. But anytime either of those guys get near a blues or a Monk tune, look out HOTYFT*

Let's see here.......

Agree with the Reelin' in the Years and Gary Moore comments.  I would add the following:

Robben Ford- Revelation
Larry Carlton- (probably) Kid Charlemagne
Mike Stern- Like Someone in Love

Also, why is there never any love for the Jazz guitar community in these kinds of lists?  I think A LOT of the guys in the Gibson list would go running with their tails between their legs if they had to duel it out with Joe Pass or Jim Hall.  Just sayin'...

Rancid - Maxwell Murder never makes the lists, 'cause nobody thinks of the sweet bass solo.

I think I stressed that in my responce, I have so many modern and old jazz recordings that have solos that are miles ahead of Rock

how about Al D's  "kiss my axe"

First of all, if you're going to cite Roy Buchanan, forget "The Messiah Will Come Again", it's all about this:

The live version #3 from 1974 is better than the video above: http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1285904782/ref=sr_gnr_fkmr0?ie=UTF8&node=163856011&search-alias=digital-music&field-keywords=buchanan%20hey%20joe

So According to this list. people stopped playing guitar around... 1991?

if they think that some phenomenal artists haven't done some amazing things in the last decade...

they need to clean out their old man ears.

Sultans of Swing, awesome

Pink floyds wall ptII. Didn't make the list I don't know why

Solos don't have to shred to be awesome, and I agree with everyones opinion so far. Stairway to heaven should be in the 20's in my opinion.

Plus I like eddies stuff, his solos were not alll the same sounding. eruption number 2? I can live with that but understand those of you that didn't grow up with EVH

Ditto on anything by Roy Buchanan--an insanely talented individual, but sadly, a terrribly tortured soul. I agree with what someone said earlier about Slash's tone--the day is coming, and its not too far off, where everything he plays will sound the same, much like Carlos Santana.

Here are a few I thought could have made the list (some of these selections are a bit obscure, I'll admit):

Sharp Dressed Man-ZZ Top
Eastbound and down-Jerry Reed
Squealer-AC/DC
I'm Going Home-Ten Years After (Live at Woodstock)
Tattoo'd Lady-Rory Gallagher (Irish Tour '74)
Sign of the Gypsy Queen-April Wine
Limelight-Rush
Terraplane Blues-Foghat
See The Light-Jeff Healey
Snortin' Whiskey & Drinkin' Cocaine-Pat Travers
Five to One-The Doors
Two Minutes to Midnight-Iron Maiden
Do YOu Feel Like We Do-Peter Frampton
Maggot Brain-Funkadelic
The Thrill is Gone-BB King
Miserlou-Dick Dale

Those are just my take on it, but no matter what you think or I think, none of these lists will ever be perfect for anybody, and to be honest, that's what makes them kind of fun.

Brian Eno's tune "St Elmos Fire"
two of my favs

off of the album ANOTHER GREEN WORLD
has Robert Fripp doing one of greatest solos of all time:

I will humbly submit Adam Jones from Tool....
Catch it around 6:30, for some nice soloing under the verse....
Oh, the vid is pretty cool too, I think....

cleaning ears has nothing to do with it, we are just bringing up artist that soared way beyond the rest and innovated a lot of what you hear today. You hear so much today that is rehash of a lot of this stuff. Open your ears to the influences of the greats of today and these are the guys that it trace back to.

I remember watching Brian Setzer Blow Dickey Betts off the stage one night (right after the demise of the stray cats) and was in denial that some rock a billy could out play a favorite of mine. I listen to what he does with his big band stuff now and just am amazed with how he can combine the styles and have a extremely fluid format.

Music lives forever, in the minds of those who enjoy it, so those long past players that are recorded will be brought up every time a discussion like this comes around. Because they were that good.
