The racist comments about Japan

I'm really, really annoyed that this was ever an issue at all.  I'm someone who LOVES Japanese culture.  I have traveled there many times since I was 16, and the mother of one of my good friends who I have played music with since childhood is from Okinawa.  I have seen the best and worst parts of Japanese culture, and it's one of two places I would considering moving to outside of Western Washington state.

I don't see how one guy making a flippant comment about generalizations about POPULAR CULTURE suddenly becomes OMG YOU HATE MY WIFE.  I would hope that you all could appreciate a degree of the truisms in his (admittedly ignorant) statements and let it go.  Since when did these boards become the flipping moral nice-guy police?

I'm glad you folks worked things out, honestly.  I hope this episode can end what seems to be a trend of getting bum-hurt over silly things that people say on the internet.  I have too much respect for Mully and everyone else involved to not say anything, and I hope you take what I've said into consideration and let it go, either way... and don't round up the Disney police and burn some stakes~

Stop eating American candy and after a while it will taste disgusting to you, as it does to most of the world...

I'm afraid you are right... I still remember the first time I tried to eat that stuff that you seem to call Chocolate.. what is it again? oh yeah, Hershey's  :icon_biggrin:
I don't eat a lot of Candy at all, but I have been called a chocolate snob since I moved here :)

the other issue with american food is the high fructose corn syrup that is in almost every single thing you eat! I know they are trying to say that it is totally healthy, but I am sure it isn't..
you can feel the change in yer body as soon as you switch from normal food to food with HFCS... it screws with you!

Men's Pocky FTW!

We live about a quarter mile from a Korean supermarket in Santa Clara, and they have some bizarro snack foods there.  Whenever my kids have a sleep-over, we go there and get exotic snacks and soft drinks and part of the fun for the kids is kind of daring each other to try the outlandish goodies.  But the day we got Men's Pocky, I was converted.  I dunno why it's "Men's", but hey, if it keeps the kids away from my goodies (fat chance), I'm all for the wacky Engrish approach to naming conventions.

Now, Sing with me!

Isn't that song about masturbating?

I dunno.  I just know it's got a good hook in that loopy 80's kinda way, and I don't even know all the words.

I think you can find whatever you want to find in a lot of cultural phenomena.  Hell, Jerry Falwell decided the Teletubbies were pro-gay propaganda.  Happy digging!

Peace

Anyone ever try those ORANGE Hostess Cupcakes?

So hard to find. but I rather like them.

Dude, don't even get me started on stuff like that or I'll be making negative comments about Japan too. That is one thing this country is sorely lacking, cheap, garbage snacks that taste great.
MULLY
I'd give my left nut for a Reese's Cup
I'll trade you a few boxes of Reeses for a Mesa Boogie.

if theres a Mesa Boogie involved i'll double Max's offer  :laughing7:

It's "Mens" because it's a Japanese belief that men don't like the sweets as much as ladies do, therefore the dark chocolate version is the man's treat.

As to the main subject, I lived in Japan for 5 years and my wife is Japanese, I was just there at New Year's. I have seriously considered taking a permanent-type job in Tokyo, just recently actually. I guess I've been on the internet long enough now that seeing ignorant ridiculous rubbish here doesn't surprise me too much. The guy was just being a complete idiot, and shame on him for mouthing off about crap he knows nothing about, but he wasn't personally attacking anyone and he promptly issued a TOTALLY Japanese-like abject apology, to my great amusement. So, whatevs, right.  :party07: :party07:

I got a Mesa Boogie F30 combo I'll let go for a reasonable price.  But I won't swap it out for Reese's PB cups, sorry.

Apparently you haven't been paying attention.  I'm a Men's Pocky man.

My grandmother had a Japanese exchange student for 2 years.  She would get a hankering for real Japanese food, and we would find an Asian market.  This was my first experience with Japanese sweets.  The thing I remember is that they like to mix salts and sweets in the same snack and in extreme amounts.  A lot of these snacks have the appearance and consistency of pretzels.

I don't know why, but swedish anime-fans and cosplayers seem to have a real thing for Pocky. Not just any Japanese candy, it has to be Pocky. Whenever they see it, they go crazy for it. I think it's mainly because it's from Japan, it's not like it tastes über awesome or anything. :/
It's not bad, but you can tell it's cheap chocolate meets cheap version of a Grissini. I'd rather have a real thin Grissini dipped in well-tempered Belgian chocolate but then, I'm a bit of a connaisseur, or at least I try.  :laughing7:
