Tat Strat

I filled in the first fret but haven't burned it yet until I'm sure about it but I think that will really complete the look of the neck. Still drawing the 7th fret but I'm about halfway done with the neck. A little cleanup, a little more stain on the back and sides and I'll be ready to oil it up.  :blob7:

It looks much better already with those two positions filled. If you're still vacillating, count this as a vote to do it.

How about designing the first fret without the "dot" hole in the middle, then you can have the look complementing the headstock but diffrentiating the first fret from the others...

You're a really good artist... comix? A day job, inscribing ancient temples... I vaa-aant your guitar too. :evil4: You could charge people for work that nice. I have thought about trying to do a greenish, rotting-Mayan-temple-stone-carved guitar - the jungle moldy part of it's not that hard, but I don't have the drawing skills to do the little temple gremlin guys. Hmmm...

Too late - I tried to finish most of the outlines this morning so the 1st fret is already done. I still have to finish drawing the smallest frets and the shading by this weekend. More photos soon.

Sounds like a cool concept - PM me with some details. That would be a nice guitar to build and finish before the Mayan calendar runs out and the world ends in 2012.  :headbang1:

this thing has guitar of the decade written all over it

Thanks - I can't wait to see how my guitar competes against all the other amazing guitars on this site.

One that I would not want to compete with is Kuro Uma's wicked black guitar with the masked binding design  :o

No. Sorry, my strat already has that title... oh, and guitar of the century too, so you're all f**ked.

Forgive me if I missed an earlier post, but I have a question. Are the darker parts of the design a liquid wood-stain, or is that burned fingerboard?

This is my favorite current thread here, and I really, really can't wait to see the next installments. Keep 'em coming!

Thanks - All the designs on the front of the body, fretboard and headstock are woodburned, no stain. The dark outline is done with a scalpel-like tip and the brown shading is done with a small spoon-shaped tip. The back and sides of the body are stained with Minwax ebony and mahogany wood stain.

I was thinking you were burning the stain, I just wasn't sure. Thanks for the response. You are really onto something with this guitar.

However, I would caution showing it to people. You'll be deluged with requests to do more guitars for people! Fantastic idea and excellent execution. Keep up the great work and keep feeding us pictures, please!

Which might turn into something awful, like "making a living"....  :laughing3:

If you think about the color combinations that could be used, background and foreground, different dyes and paint... he could really, really be on to something. The quality of the initial line work (and the patience to do it right) is what stands out, to me. I've seen beautiful bodies with finishes and ideas so ugly it would make the Gods cry.... oh wait, they already do. It's called "rain."

ADD: My favorite artist of recent years is a "comic author" named Jim Woodring. He does these hyper-realist fantasy drawings with weird temple toys that turn into insects that turn into... well, you know:

It would be really cool to... well I'm thinking. Is maple the preferred body wood for this? (I can sort out the stupid tone later :laughing3:)

That kind of art would look good on a guitar. The thing with using another artist's work  - if you're going to show off your guitar in public or post photos online, I would contact the artist first for permission. Some may want to be paid for the rights to their work, some may let you use it for free if you credit them for the art.

Once I get this guitar done, I have a bunch of different ideas to choose from for guitars with art covering the whole front. Maybe with carving, paint pens, or something else.

The reason I chose maple is because I wanted a light-colored wood and have the body, neck, and fretboard the same. The choice was based more on appearance but I like heavy guitars too and I don't think it will have a major effect on the sound - it might even compliment the sound I'm going for.

How many hours do you think you have in designs plus burning?

It doesn't really take as long as it might seem. Even though I started over 4 months ago, I've only worked on it for a few hours every other weekend. If I had nothing else to do, I could do a project like this in about a week.
