If I had ordered the Vintage Fender rout, it wouldn't be a problem. But instead I got the Standard, which is close but not quite close enough to the Vintage. I think if I tried to use either the Vintage or Hipshot, the screws would not go in straight.

This photo doesn't show much progress because it's just the outline but I got almost a quarter of the outline done now. It's my first time woodburning so you can see in the end of the upper horn where I started out too light but I got the hang of it and I'll go back to darken that later. Ordering a shading tip today which will really make the design stand out.

Since this is supposed to be a tattoo, I decided to do a blood-colored stain on the back instead of dark brown/ebony. I'll try to get something as close to blood as possible - I'm thinking of something like the traditional Gibson SG finish, but still with some black in the grain. Then I'll have a thin "binding" of unfinished maple between the woodburning and stain.

looking good, I really enjoyed the wood burn process on mine so I know you will also, different tips require a bit of practice, I made a few signs practicing

About the wood burning process - I'm using a Razertip burner with adjustable heat level and one pen connection. These kind of burners can go from around $100 - $140 or around $200 for a double pen burner. It's worth the price because of the adjustable heat.

The burner comes with one pen. It's about the size and weight of an ink pen and comes with a foam grip. The metal tip is permanently attached to the pen section so for about $25 you can buy a different one - I only have the one that came with the setup which is like a scalpel blade, and I'm getting a tiny spoon shaped pen for shading. And I use a curved Xacto blade to scrape a clean edge to any rough spots.

Here's a closeup of the woodburned outline:

Cool... :o

If your feeling cocky with the new burner, you could try some shading in some area to give it some depth.... :dontknow:

I would practice shading on a other board myself, but it would be a great idea
That would probably be a good idea, but still with his design he's got going, it wouldn''t take much more than just darkening some spots... :dontknow:

+1 I think that would kickass, not that it doesn't already  :icon_thumright:

I was just looking at guitar porn online and found this one that's similar to the artwork I did, only it's carved and painted. I'll be very happy if mine comes out looking this good. There's a few more guitars at this link with similar designs, including a couple of telecasters, an SG and more.

The SG is pretty cool looking...

For some reason that site made me want to build something with Jay Ryan style artwork burned onto it:

I'm waiting for a new woodburning tool which is taking longer than expected and I also decided to start staining the edge and back before I finish woodburning near the edges. Taping off the binding was harder than I thought and as you can see from the second photo, the stain leaked between the tape in some spots. So I'm just sanding and lightly scraping the edge untill the line is smooth. It's still really uneven now so I'll have to put on more stain with a q-tip and do it little by little.

I'm still undecided about the color of the stain. As you can see, it will have a black undercoat but I'm not sure if I'll finish it with dark brown, dark red or more black. I bought some dark red stain which looked good in the can and the in-store sample but when I tested it, I saw a hint of purple which I didn't like. In photo of the back, the first coat of ebony stain had a burnt look to it which looked cool but I'm staining it really dark but thin enough for the grain to show through. There's also a photo that shows how the stained edge shows from the front which is what I was going for.
