Raga's Muffinmaster Korina Jazzmaster MkII

Is the Colorsound supposed to be a Sola Tonebender clone?

ToneBenders are my favorite fuzzes but they are hairy beasts. As you discovered, unless you push them hard they quickly become unusable.
Tonebenders are cool! This is a Colorsound Fuzzbox/commonly just called the one knob fuzz. I've heard that it's most related to a Fuzz Face, but mine sounds pretty wild/not-so-FuzzFace-ey and unfortunately doesn't do the volume knob cleanup thing very well.fuzzbox01.jpg

Oh cool, I am not familiar with those. Never thought about cleaning up a fuzz - I have always been fond of the mk2 ToneBenders and they definitely do not like to clean up at all.

Put together the fuzz face circuit today!

At the recommendation of someone on another forum I replaced my standard jazzmaster slide switch with a 3pdt slide switch which will supposedly give me better battery life by disconnecting the battery power when not in use... Now I just have to figure out how the heck to wire it! I wired it definitely wrong the first time (I had the orientation of the switch wrong) but I may have it right now?

While I was in there changing up the wiring I switched the volume and tone pots to splined shaft so that strat style knobs will fit correctly.

This guitar has entirely too many wires... There's enough spaghetti in there to feed a whole family!

Man, very clean work !! How do you get your push back wire to have such nice clean edges ? Mine are always frayed and a mess by the time I'm done..... :(

Thanks! For clean pushback wire sharp cutters are important, but also the wire/coating itself; I make sure to buy ones that are Gavitt brand as they tend to have a good waxy coating that pushes back well. I bought some no-name pushback wire one time that was not waxy enough and would get frayed and messy no matter what I did.

Good Lord, do they allow you any mealtime breaks?

Definitely had it wrong still, but I think I've got it right now! Power goes to the switch to the board, not board to the switch, and this is a PNP Fuzz Face circuit so I had to reverse the grounds. Based on voltage readings the switching seems to be working.

Edit: nope it was still wrong! But I fixed it with a health dose of help from some good folks at the PedalPCB forum

Got her all put back together with the new fuzz circuit and SHW Fred's bridge pickup and everything is working correctly and sounding really nice!

The Fuzz Face circuit is more my speed; not as wild as the Colorsound and cleans up nicely with the volume knob or bass cut. It's a bit more velcro/zipper-y than I would like and I think this is due to the bias, so next time I open her up I'll play around with that.

The Fred's bridge pickup is great! It's just the sound that I wanted. Fat but plenty clear and tight with a bit of bite. No squawk like I was getting with the Woody++

I reverse-shimmed the neck with a piece of business card to reduce the bridge height a little, but it's still kind of high. It's fine for now, but at some point I will re-route the neck pocket to have less angle
