Pricings, and why?

I know that my time investments were significant - but I was never working finish work on an asembly line like W. I can see easily have eight hours into a finish job when worked as a stand alone project - and even more hours if you're making the body neck from rough materials and need to do all the sanding/leveling prep as well

yessiree, that $250 for W to apply a finish is an excellent deal when you figure in all of the hidden costs and pay yourself at even a measely $10/hour rate

Hey guys, try to remember that wanna is like 12 years old....take it easy on the kid...

That is true.  He has a lot of time, particularly during summer vacation.

He's not the only one...
But this school project is really getting on my nerves. Lucky Canadians.. illegal for work over summer break there...

I know one of the hidden cost though is getting it right too, took me a few times to get a perfect looking body so if painting is not one of your hobbies that you don't want to invest in, then yes paying Warmoth is a deal. For some however painting is a hobby and something worth investing in, so then buying the tools would make sense. You don't always need a shop to paint, I paint in the stair case of my apartment (lots of air there) and while it's not the ideal environment it's good for my needs. So my 20 dollar finish only figures the cost of expendable materials like paint, sandpaper, dyes, etc, but doesn't account for times (I am not an accountant and I take guitar finishing as a learning experience, so I guess the time spent is more like tuition or something)

You can always use products like reranch if you don't feel like investing but you're out of luck if you live overseas, and even if you live in Con US the cost of reranch products for one guitar is almost as much as Warmoth finish. After about 2-3 finishes it really makes more sense to buy spray gear rather than buying reranch products...

you ever accidently spray on the walls in the stairway and piss off your land lord?

Brian

Clears are no problem, I never accidentally spray on the walls and oversprays cleans up pretty good. Besides the stairway in my apartment isn't owned by the landlord, so he doesn't really care...

I'm seeing more and more of those hidden costs being revealed. sure looks like a "$20 finish" is significantly more than that when all of the costs are accounted for, eh? ;)

now if anybody knows of a free compressor, spray gun, and shop ... I'm sure a couple of the guys here would be very interested  :icon_biggrin:

Well, the thing is, i do..................... :laughing7:

But i don't have the foggiest on finishing so it looks like i'm going to be paying another 170 bucks, unless i try it, then i'd probably muck it up.

Warmoth does as great a job "AS ANY BIG NAME" on the planet. PERIOD !

and all at a FRACTION OF THE COST of what the big name custom shops charge !

just don't tell anyone . . .shhhh ! it'll be our little secret . :laughing7:

I'll get some Minwax one-step gel stain and give you your $20 finish.  :icon_biggrin:

ahh, see there's the difference - you can finish your personal guitar as cheaply as you like and get away with it. the difference is if I was ever, ever, ever to finish a customer guitar that way (and word got out that I did such a thing) I'd never sell another instrument unless I closed shop, waited for a few years, and then re-opened under a new name (and denied ever having been a part of the previous venture)

people doing shady $20 finishes on thier guitar is a large part of why Warmoth parts instruments have insultingly low resale value. too many people have attempted to pass off their trailer trash hack job as pro finish, and the result is that most people looking to buy a used instrument steer clear of W products. it's too bad really, because the wood product is superb (as is a W applied finish!)

all the best,

R
