Nice that a TV Jones options is available, but it looks like the width for the "with ears" option is too narrow for a TV Classic with the universal mounting ears. Pickup width is 3.330" across the ears but the rout is only 3.225". Am I missing something?
I don't know. I put together a Mooncaster w/ TV Jones Classics recently and didn't have any trouble. I can't measure anything now because it's assembled and I'm not taking it apart, but if I'd have had problems I'm sure I'd remember it.
Were they the English mount as the TV Jones route is new.
They were Universal mount pickups going into a Warmoth humbucker rout. I'm not sure that TV Jones make the English mount anymore.
I checked all the measurements before I ordered but I can't seem to find the dimensions of the Warmoth humbucker rout anymore.
EDIT: Found it. 85.85 mm (3.38").
Being the TV Jone rout option has only just now become available, Kevin's MC must have the humbucker rout. TVJ universal mount pickups would certainly fit a humbucker rout using rings. Warmoth's "With Ears" option description says "Rout size accomodates ears for through-pickup wood mounting". This refers to TVJ's rendition of the mount used on Gretsch Pro series guitars. (White Falcon, Country Gentleman, etc....) TVJ's universal mounting ears convert standard Gretsch mount, directly through the pick up and into the wood (Like a P-90), to English mount, hanging from the pickguard. I did a chat session with TVJ and they confirmed that, on the standard pickups, universal mount has replaced the standard mount, standard mount with ears, and the dedicated English mount.
This site has a better explanation of the mounting options than TVJ's site.
http://www.brinksmusik.com/TV%20Jones%20Mounting%20Options.htm
It lists both the standard mount with ears, and the English mount, as a separate entities from the standard Gretsch mount, but doesn't mention the universal mount. (Understandable, since according to the certificates, the site has not been updated since Sept. 2015.)
Apparently then, if you intend on using TVJ's with the universal mount to convert them to English pickguard mount, the humbucker rout and a set of TVJ rings is the way to go. If, on the other hand, you intend to mount them directly to the body, the TVJ without ears should work.
