New LP body shape

Hello everybody at this great forum. My name is Rob from the Netherlands, a guitar addict, a rather poor player, and a great fan of Warmoth LPs ever since I saw Orpheo’s collection on a Dutch guitarforum. Then just when I knew I wanted an LP myself (some time in 2013 when my savings have grown to the required amount) I heard about this giant guitar firm bothering Warmoth about the shape of its LP body.
So, I wonder, what will Warmoth do to its LP body shape to make it non-infringing? Any clues here? Will they change the shape of the lower horn? Or the controls lay-out? I’d love to hear your ideas!

Anyway, would love to have a warmoth LP next year, preferably a Black Korina body, flame maple top, and maybe a korina neck with an ebony fretboard, but there’s still time for making up my mind about that.

Hi Rob_G

Welcome here.

Warmoths official text about the subject so far is:

"In response to Gibson’s legal demands over trademark infringements, Warmoth is no longer able to build new product for this precise body shape. However, there may be existing product available from our In Stock Showcase that will satisfy your needs – until they are all gone. New, similar but non infringing, bodies will be available in the coming months. We beg your understanding and apologies for any inconvenience this might cause."

So far there has been no news about actual body shapes and/or options. So we can only guess.

My guess is it will be awesome.

By the way - don't mind Marko - he used to be European, Dutch or something like that  :icon_biggrin:

My guess is that it'll land somewhere In between the old LP shape and a PRS single cut design. Which I'm absolutely ok with! I'm really excited to see what they'll replace the L5S with.

Welcome.

I'm pretty sure they will change the body shape, the control lay out makes no sense because you can order it unrouted and put the controls whenever you want. Check the PRS and VIP shapes, it would be something similar. Some will like it, some will not.

LP bodies are expensive so maybe there would be some in the showcase when you are ready to buy.

One of PRS's main design guys just opened up his shop, right up the road from PRS. Knaggs guitars... his "Influence" series has got that same, PRS-ish "Les Paul meets Telecaster" thing working as the PRS singlecut.

There are some shapelier versions in my opinion, Nik Huber's in the first column here:

Johan Gustavsson's sniffin' right up the exact same tree:
http://www.jgguitars.com/bluesmaster-custom-59

It looks to me like Huber's are just a tiny hair wider, a couple mm max. Fugijen's "Flame" series is similar, slightly narrower across the upper bout and a noticeably smaller waist:

There are several variants on the asymmetric doublecut 335/Strat mongrel, the Starcaster is one obvious member of the fat-horn branch, Matt Artinger's got a thinner-horned doublecut:

pretty close to the Languedoc's that Phish Guy plays.

I would be monstrously, overwhelmingly, ecstatically-thrilled if Warmoth were to sponsor a shape-designing contest, because I'd win. It really surprises me to see so many skilled luthiers who can only put out reruns after reruns after reruns of other people's shapes, or worst yet make butt-ugly guitars. Although you don't have to be small to make ugly guitars, most Rickenbackers are so nasty it makes my head hurt and even Paul Reed Smith's "classic" doublecut and the Santana shapes look to me like he gave up designing at about the 90% point. It's just never came up in my rotation to have an entire woodshop and a few spare years.... there are some nice designs that pop up in surprising places, Washburn has come up with some nice shapes outta nowhere, or the Mark Morton Jackson:

Mr. DeTemple the $7,000 Fender copy guy has finally gotten around to "designing" a guitar, the "Stellacasta." So grab your barf bags and scroll on down if you dare, kids:

Seriously, Warmoth: I can do better than that. My cats can do better than that, my cat's fleas can do better than... well just lemme know when I'm needed. :icon_thumright:

I concur.  Look at this beauty (I hope Bigsby doesn't resurrect itself and come after him for the headstock similarity, though):

Ya know, I hate Gibson (and I'll never own one). I'm really sorry I spoke out in defense of their asses when they got raided for illegal woods. I still don't agree with the way that it was done, but Gibson deserves any and all grief they get.

I already know - It's a Starcaster!
I certainly hope it is.  I also hope that they add a couple of thinline options to their other shapes.  I want a thinline Jazzmaster, but with my own absurd ideas added in.  I know that they have enough to do to keep the business going strong, but wow, it seems like it wouldn't be like coding a the archtop on a Les Paul to do the thinline addition.  Shoot, add the bender route if you want to get all snazzy, still seems easier than an arched top.  However, I still need a gold top, so I am waiting to see what they come out with.

I just checked the warmoth site and saw some body shapes no longer available. I ordered back at the end of september a LP and FB body from warmoth? I assume this was before the "issues". I hope so as both guitars were paid in full. I am glad I did an explorer next year.

The funny thing is planning the warmoth explorer got me to have the explorer bug once again so I bought 2 gibsons to hold me over . . . .

So its not ok for the government to enforce some guidelines that were put in place to keep major money out of drug loards hands but it is ok to rip off some body's iconic and flagship design? That doesn't make sense. :dontknow:

They would have contacted you by now if it wasn't.

Don't forget the pic's  :icon_biggrin:

Good to hear. I already received the body for a black koa Jazz bass and it looks great. Waiting for the neck. Also waiting for a purple dye flame top LP body and flame maple neck for a JTV variax xplant. Also waiting for a purple mist metallic firebird body to go with a flame maple tele neck I won on ebay. The firebird will also get JTV variax guts.

I will post pics when I get them.
