As far a dying the thing goes, yes you can make a burst with the dyes. I would start with the darker one around the edges and then apply the lighter one across the rest of the wood. The blending is the trick. I have used alcohol based dyes and they blend very easily with a little acetone on a paper towel. There are also MEK dyes and water based dyes if you get powders, and premixed dyes as well.
If you are doing the taped natural binding, I would go with the water based dyes. The concept is quite easy on those. Tape off an area to be the natural binding, spray with lacquer, or probably sanding sealer would work, and let it dry. Remove tape carefully, and do the finish work on the rest of the body. Latex pin-striping tape can be very helpful for this because it bends really well to give a nice line. The water based dye will not dissolve any of the finishes, or into any of them, making it much easier to keep the hot side hot and the cold side cold.
