Look at what UPS dropped off...

That is some beautiful stuff! Kind makes me wish it made a stop at my house first for a little finish.

Two at a time plus the two custom jobs that have been the subject of our recent saga.

So Orph, I take it the drug business is doing well these days?

Must be doing well, or he's independently wealthy.... :dontknow:

Those fretboards are macassar ebony :)

and about the nut; I'll be using graphtech nuts, no locking nut. I like the feel and tone of floyds (without toplock) and I like the finetuners, but I don't like that toplock, so I'll be using graphtech nuts with locking tuners. kinda like the wilkinsin-setup, but only a bit better (imho).

Does the Floyd stay in tune with that setup? Any problems with strings falling out of the nut when you drop the trem all the way until they flop around?

yes, it stays in tune rather well. about as much as with a  wilkie. the strings won't fall out of the nut with a 'superlow dive', cause the strings won't go all flat out if you're not using a locking nut.

the custom finish AND custom inlay will be about 800$ all in. that job will take some months, literally. so don't expect any progress soon.

and why do you guys keep on nagging about my income, every once in a while (aka; whenever I buy something new). I work in a movietheater, and I don't have much expenses, and I save for at least 3 months for a job like this.

I decided to try and finish this set myself. the koa is easy, thats just clearcoats (perhaps I'll try my hands on a small blackburst, just to give it a bit of contrast; if I don't like it, I can always sand the stain off).

but the quilt top, thats a bit of a pickle. I started with black, sanded it off, then purple, then dark purple, and now I am waiting for it to dry. I'll sand away from the middle to the edge, stopping 2 centimeters from the edge, creating a  burst. if it sucks, I can always use a sanding machine and sand the whole wack off, but so far: I LIKE!

if it stinks with lacquer on it: acetone, and sanding till the bare wood pops up again.

I will be using acrylate lacquer, cause nitro is a bi-atch to find here (in aerosol spraycans!)

You have options with that burst technique.  You can also use dilute versions of other colors to "tint" the thing if a color is not quite what you want.  I played around a lot with the dyes and was pleasantly surprised at how versatile the stuff is for a variety of styles of finishes.

I used multiple techniques, for one guitar. I started with black, sanded it off as good as I was able to do (without an electric sander- all by hand). then I stained it purple, and then with a darker shade of purple. I sanded that off, and I created a burst at the same time. I liked the darker purple at the edge than the lighter purple I used earlier :) I sanded off a bit too much, so I had to stain it up a bit. Then it was too dark, so I used water to dilute it a bit, and then with sanding paper to make it look a bit smoother.

I WISH I had an electric sander, cause those machines make much less scratches than regular sanding paper! you see some of the scratches, unfortunately. but I do love the color and I DO love that top and back. the little mistakes are there to live and learn (or something like that :D ) the binding isn't as tidy as I wanted, but in general: I like it :)

here are some pics.

no, it aint a 'tonar' finish. not yet, not never. but I'm happy with it. tomorrow, I'll sand the guitar, and get rid of the drippers.

I also sprayed the koa top. its REALLY flamey. sometimes the flames are so extreme. the walnut back is also super-flamey. I also like the flamed black korina-back. it really pops under the finish.

The reason some pieces look blodgy is just because of the lighting. not because the finish looks blodged :) :P

thanks Doug and Hannaugh! it was really touch and go sometimes, but I think I pulled my first paintjob off nicely. I'm going out to buy more spraycans right now. I need to :P I have to finish two guitars, 4 backplates and 2 headstocks! I'll be giving the headstocks just 4 coats, the backplates will get also just 4 coats, but the bodies will get at least 8 coats, maybe even more. from what I hear, I might have to use 2 cans for 1 guitar. too bad that 90% of what you spray gets evaporated in the air, and doesn't land on the guitar :P

I've always been a fan of purple guitars and basses. Love the color, Orpheo. Fantastic choice for an LP.

this will be my third les paul with a purplemist finish, my fourth les paul with purple on maple, and my seventh les paul with purple somewhere in the guitar (being either neck or body).

I love purple. for me, purple is the 'new black'.  its got more style, and it looks meaner than black but it also has a bit more style.
