Moving the bridge sounds like the best solution to me, might have to do some readjusting with the nut and the pickup rout..... :dontknow:

The nut is fine, and there is about an inch between the front of the bridge and the bottom of the pickup route currently so moving 1/8" won't make a huge difference. I'll just shave some linoleum off my pickguard to make it look like I did it on purpose.

Isn't this a fretless with just lines on it? If that is the case just go with it. Your lines wil be off but it will work.

If I had any kind of ability to tell what I was playing without looking at the board, that wouldn't be a problem.

Updates today... got the headstock mostly finished, slimmed down the fretboard to the same size as the neck and started shaping it. Plus I re-did a bit of the pickguard to make it more balanced.

I'm starting to look at this futon as a big pile of air-dried 25 year old pine waiting to be used... either that, or its going to the Salvation Army after this project. I grew up on that thing, maybe I could turn it into a five-string P(ine) bass?

Tomorrow is the due date.. uploading these while the dust settles in the garage. The neck features what I'm patenting as my E.W. (Ergonomics? What?) profile.

This futon is awesome.

Got it wired, it works, go the ferrules put into the neck, got the nut glued into the fretboard which I just gave up trying to cover my original error of gluing it on incorrectly. It'll play, but the lines will be off.

The string alignment sucks as the fretboard is too narrow, the fret lines are way off, the action at the bridge is obscenely high to make the strings almost rub the board.. and it works.

Pretty cool, but you should spend the left over .14 cents for some picture taking skillz.... :icon_biggrin:

This camera phone I'm using went swimming recently, and the photo quality wasn't great to begin with.  :help:

This time, with a camera!

I think I might have spent that last 14 cents on some sandpaper to break the corners off that headstock, but otherwise, I'd say you've done a superfine job. Time to put it on eBay for $3,295 "buy it now", and see where it goes.

I had sandpaper, but it seemed like the more I tried to do on the headstock, the worse things got. I sanded on the back of the neck down a bit and revealed a big knot, so I eventually just left the neck alone and finished it.

Yeah, I seem to remember something about a project getting to the point where you simply have to shoot the engineer and get on with production, or you'll never have anything <grin>

The body is very interesting! But the headstock is butt ugly, sorry

I agree. When I designed the thing originally I was planning on using Ultralites or Gotoh at the least, but all I could get for the money was huge vintage-style tuners so I had to do a last-minute redesign. Ahh well.

did we ever run the contest?  did I miss it?

i don't think so :icon_scratch: seemed like it was kind of KG's baby, and when he left it kind of got overshadowed. i'd love to have a thread on all the builds with a poll. definitely one of the cooler things this forum's done since... well, every GOTM i guess :icon_biggrin:

Left?  Where did he go?  I am really out of it.

about a week before the contest was supposed to take place. He put his bass up for sale (the one the formn paid for) and got a lot of crap for it. Seems like he was just in a bad spot in life and unpluged most of his internet life just keeping to "real" friends. He may come back one day.

Before I get made out to be the D-bag of the year, he was selling the bass that his family and forum members helped him buy.  I think him selling it was a D-bag move and not finishing the coordination of the contest that so many were taking serious was a D-bag move too.
