Jag Project - How long have you been waiting?

Is it just me, or is that Surf Green Douglas Corvis looking better and better?
Nope ... Not just you  :icon_biggrin:

But ya gotta give him credit for trying something on an old body.  :icon_thumright:

Hey Altar ....
I found you some strings for it, if it doesn't work out the way you want it to.

That's priceless... :laughing11:

I just read the whole thread, and the thing that sticks out is the comment about not building cheap guitars.  In '65 or '66, this wasn't exactly a Cadillac.  The years that have passed and the fact the company is still around, even if in name only, are what makes this valuable.  I'd wager the mods done have hurt the value, unless done by a famous person.  SRV's #1 would be worthless without the SRV attached to it.  It's the same with Dave Gilmour's Strat (6 hole to Kahler back to 6 hole trem) and Dave Murray's '57 Paul Kossof Strat.  Danelectros, Silvertones, Airline and the like were not nice guitars then, or even now.  They're just old, which supposedly makes them valuable.  There are garages full of First Acts and Starcasters from Target and Best Buy put there by someone hoping history repeats itself.  My dad had a Jaguar and Mustang he bought new that he sold cheap in the late 60s because it was time to grow up.  Fender was a young company, already sold infact, with no hint of a future vintage market.

Agreed on many points. However, this was indeed a cadillac. It was at the top of the fender priceline, all the best guitarists had one. Spot on with the mustang, it was a midrange, cheaper guitar that went up in value... But I would say that the quality of Fender's budget line has dropped substantially. In 1965, a budget guitar could mean an alder body, a maple neck, nitro finish, good pickups, and a decent setup straight from the factory. They were better student guitars than we have now for sure.

I'm not saying that a jag was great straight out of the box, But they are so sexy, and they are truly great with a good setup and a couple new parts.

It's a CBS headstock. Whaddaya want? They're almost universally hated. Even Fender doesn't do them any more, for fear of never selling another guitar.

But, good job on the pictures.

Thanks. :toothy12:

But there is a huge diffference between:

And:

Not to mention, it just looks better on a jag.

They're both equally ugly.  The only way to make it worse would be to reverse it, and, obviously, use gold hardware.

Don't listen to 'em, looks pretty good to me. Even the full fat CBS doesn't bother me that much - just brings me out in some minor hives. The Jag 'stock is cool though - have one on a Stratosonic and it looks sharp - large, but sharp!

Here are just a few of the 70s headstocks that Fender doesn't do:

(all are from different current production models)

(and yes I may have deliberately misunderstood a post for joke purposes)

No kidding. Luckily (for you and the preservation of gold stocks), I don't think they were ever offered with gold plated hardware. They'd rust up soon enough anyway.

I think it just looks right on a jag, although there is something to be said for Kurdtz jag with the strat headstock.

I'm not a "Gold hardware? Never!" type of guy. I don't like it much until it corrodes and the patina softens, but sometimes it's just right.

And yes, Fender offered gold hardware jags if you had money and asked nicely.

Well, I'll tell ya... I like gold hardware when it's appropriate, but that is one goofy application of it.
