But the dog ate my SD card reader.

Well then, there's only one thing to do

Evidence, motive, method, opportunity... no there's a much better way, and pretty much all it takes is looking the other way :)

Okay now, seriously, it wasn't the dog's fault. It turned up, of course after running to wally world to buy another $8 reader.

So here it is:

That poor dog. There is no greater insult to a canine, then to be shagged by a cat.  :dontknow:

Beautiful guitar, will be great to see it coming together

That is one fine-looking body. If it was me, I'd be thinking a very light clear amber finish. Anything more will hide the contrasting grain and you don't want that.

I'm a big cat lover. That one reminds me of "Cleo", a cat we had when I was just a grasshopper...

They're different than other cats, sorta the way the oriental breeds are. Got a different mindset than your average cat.

I'll bet that body has some strange, unidentifiable smells to it that humans probably can't sense. I've read that one of the things that makes working exotic woods hard on people because of dermal or respiratory sensitivity is that they mostly grow in areas that have either long or non-stop growing seasons, which means they have greater exposure to predation from insects, fungi, disease, etc. Because of that, they've naturally evolved intrinsic toxins to defend themselves against those threats. Sort of a "Mother Nature's Insecticide/Fungicide". Get it on your skin or in your lungs, and you react to it, which teaches you to leave it alone.

Cat's smart enough to sniff but don't touch. Dog would probably eat it, thinking he could throw it up later if it's a problem <grin>

I was kidding about naming the next calico 'Korina' but seeing this picture... I only wish they had as much orange in the guitar.  She's curious about anything new that comes in the house, mistrustful critter, and evil, but I love her anyway. Can't  exchange em just because they're evil. She does have a sweet side that pretty much only I and my wife have seen (and it took her about 3 years to really warm up to my wife)

In person the guitar is not as dark overall as I'd worried. Right now the plan is to use Z-poxy fill, and wiipe-on urethane (Behlens Master-Gel - thanks to Steve_Karl - if I can find it local or if you guys talk me out of Minwax wipe-on poly) I do want to bring out the wet look and keep contrast without really making the thing any darker overall.

:o Bit of "rough play" happening. The cat is biting his ear. OK, I'm going leave this alone now

That's what I meant about them (calicos) being kinda like orientals (siamese, burmese, himalayan) - they're very personable and dedicated to/protective of their owners and their household. Strangers are to be shredded. After sniffing and pretending to be friendly, of course <grin>

For the same reasons, I think I'm going to do a ColorTone clear fill and the Behlen's thing on my mahogany Strat. What's the worst thing that could happen?

Its gonna look so sweet with gold pickup covers, Wenge/Ebony/GD6105 w/ no inlays. Seeing it wet makes me think again that I'm really going to have to work to keep this puppy from going too dark though.  Hmm what to do...

That's an increddible body!
When did warmoth start giving cats away on their orders?

It's the most popular breed of cat there is. FREE.  Free to good home.   Thanks for all the kind words. I just hope I don't screw it up.

Easy. Don't stain the contrast away. That's what makes the wood so distinctive and attractive.

I had the same problem when I did the front face pieces for Mayfly's amp cabinets. I used zebrawood for those parts, and wanted to do a coffee burst on them. So I started with a very light tint, then gradually moved it out, and never paid any attention to what I was doing until somebody came into the shop and said "I thought those were supposed to be zebra?" Funny how you can miss something so blatantly obvious. I was more concerned about graduation and finish quality than I was about effect, so the very feature that makes zebra attractive was getting hidden by the stain making the light parts match the dark parts. Hell, I could have used pine and saved a bajillion dollars and a lotta work <grin>

Luckily, somebody invented sandpaper...

If it was me, I'd simply clearcoat a piece that is as attractive as that, maybe just amber smoke tint the edges a bit for some character. Any more than that, and I think you might be wasting a rare piece of extraordinarily beautiful wood. I wonder sometimes how many more pieces like that are going to be around. Be nice if your grandchildren could ooh and ahh over it.

I support the idea of clear coating it! This one is too damn beautiful to be dyed or bursted - and a clear coat is hard to mess up  :occasion14:

The second round was just wiped with naptha - and it looked a lot like the pics online. My worry is that even clear is going to darken it at least that much. I thought about trying a lighter toned grain filler - but I THINK that would only serve to lessen contrast - as the grain / figure is where it would soak up the most filler. Same with bleaching. I don't want to try to get to fancy for a first project, and would really only consider this with some advice from someone with a lot of experience, but...

I've wondered if bleaching followed by black grain fill would lighten the base tone, then allow me to regain some of the contrast lost to bleaching.  I shudder to think about trying it though.
