Forum decorum

Thank you CB.

I could dribble on about how a forum is like a microcosm of society, management preferences, etc...  I think I'll keep it short and say I greatly appreciate this forums ability to self-moderate and stay on track.  There will always be little issues that pop up, but I hope those can be kept few and far between.

I agree for the most part - with a few caveats (or extras, if you will).

I've been a member of countless forums in my lifetime, and have ran a few in the process.

But let's cut the polite, sweep-the-problem-under-the-rug kumbaya BS and show the ugly truth about internet forums:

- Some people simply cannot handle a differing opinion in real life - these same people cannot handle internet forums (they're control freaks).

- As well, just as there's ass-kissing, bias and favoritism in real life, so will you find the same on every (and I mean every) internet forum.

If you really want a pleasant forum experience, do 5 things:

1)  Learn to handle differing opinions from others (like a grown adult)
2)  Judge everyone by the same stick
3)  Don't be a lowly kiss-ass
4)  Realize that arguments can and will happen; how you handle them is what matters
5)  Don't take it too seriously or blow things out of proportion to what they really are

And one bonus tip:

READ CAREFULLY... the posts, that is.  Many times miscommunication happens
and someone gets cheesed because they didn't take the time to actually read.

Oh and just for the record:  if any of you think this particular board has gotten bad at times over the years,
you haven't seen what's out there... this place is about as peaceful a board as any I've experienced.

1. Be kind.
2. If this is too much, be polite.
3. If a topic does not interest or concern you, don't post in it.
4. If you know it will annoy/aggravate/piss you off, stop reading. Don't even open it if you can see what's coming.
5. If you have nothing constructive or at least encouraging to say, better to remain silent.

Very fine points brought up by both =CB= and Superlizard. I've also been a part of forums for a lengthy time and this forum has been especially kind towards a newcomer like me.

I've been a gamer for 15 years now and an online gamer for 10, during this time I've spent a lot of time on forums, reading and posting, and gaming forums can be especially bad. Just take a look at places like MMO-Champion, people flame, curse and are generally mean towards others, people troll, aren't serious and are just out to gried other readers/posters. The same can be said in the actual in-game chat and envorinment.

I like this forum a lot because people are friendly, respect others opinions and you can actually have likes/dislikes without someone trying to kill you in the process.

Cheers to a lovely place!  :occasion14:

Why isn't this Max's avatar yet?

Hah!  Champions Online?  You ain't kiddin' - that place is full of sociopaths.  PvP, anyone?   :tard:

I attribute part of the overall problem (everywhere) is with the way society is geared nowadays.

For some reason, it's assumed that everyone must agree with each other so as not to "offend" others.

It's gotten so bad (and childish) that someone could disagree that ketchup tastes good and the other person (who likes ketchup) gets all huffy and offended.

In all seriousness, this is the nicest, calmest, most respectful forum I belong to. And I belong to several where the scum of the Earth comes out to play.

This is one of the few forums that still feels like friends and family, for the most part.  :occasion14:

I agree about these boards, and echo similar experience with internet forums.

I've been disappointed by people here lately for a few reasons, and I'll keep it short and sweet... mostly because this discussion shouldn't have to happen at all and it's pathetic.

1) Say what you mean and be clear.  Edit after the fact if needed.
2) Your opinion on what fact is does not matter.  As =CB= alluded to, it's interesting conversation at a houseparty, but say it and let it go.  There's a TON that I don't say because I know it won't be appreciated, and that doesn't mean it doesn't have value.  It means it doesn't have value to these people, in this place, and in this conversation.  I have no idea why some people feel that it's their Flying Spaghetti Monster given right to inflict their madness on everyone at all times.
3) Drama is stupid.  I say this being a person who *enjoys* a bit of internet drama.  It's not healthy for these particular forums, and that's obvious.  Have enough self respect to self edit, and don't act like a baby that needs saving either.  Grow up and own your own experience.
4) Maybe it's time to consider why you care so much.  The internet is dangerous for the soul because there is next to no accountability.  What is it about your life that you're unsatisfied with and are trying to fill up with being right on the internet?  Figure that out and go work on that.  Quit abusing everyone's casual experience of a guitar-building forum with your personal issues.

heheh. i like that

I would like to reiterate some of the sentiments that have been expressed.
I think it's important when to walk away from a disagreement or dispute. I've come a long way - I used to want to argue with everyone about everything. Nowadays I try to only get involved if I think I can really shed some light on a situation. There's a point where even if you are sure you're right, you gotta know that arguing on a forum isn't going to accomplish anything.

On the other hand though, I don't condone a mentality that you should never argue for the risk of causing conflict. If you disagree I think it's your right and your prerogative to express that and nobody did, it'd be a sad boring world we live in. There's just a degree of moderation that we all have to learn so that things remain within the realm of constructive discussion and not mindlessly insulting one another.

Hahaha, I love that pic.  There's one more meme that's appropriate in subject, but probably not for a family-esque forum.

I was just waiting for it :)

In closing (for me in the discussion) - there is a lot of loud yapping when it comes to having the right to say anything, but it's very quiet about the part where you take responsobility for what you say. Let's be nice to each other and see how that works out, eh? :icon_thumright:
