I cant for the life of me imagine why I'm compelled to write this... but here goes.
I've always had two views of internet forums.
The first view is to compare it to a living "participatory" magazine - where anyone can contribute, and ideas stand or fall on merit. The vast majority of people who come here dont participate, they just read. They enjoy it. They look forward to it!~ We've all seen the "I'm a long time lurker, first time poster...." thread.
The other view is to compare the forum to a house party at the unOfficial Warmoth house. We're all guests here. We are here, at the pleasure of unOfficial Warmoth. We have no right to be here, because we are guests, and must behave as guests. At some grand house party there are 100 conversations going on all at the same time, and folks move from one to the next, listening, sometimes adding something. But if two guests have a disagreement, they should learn to walk away from each other, rather than continue the disagreements escalation into a more heated posture, resulting in disruption of the peaceful and pleasant party, and the mutual ejection of the participants in the brawl. We have no freedom of speech rights here. We are guests, and must act accordingly. The way I used to describe things to my own guests was "You are welcome here, have fun, but if your idea of fun is taking a crap in the corner of my living room, you're gonna be gone before you can gets your pants back up!" I think that pretty much sums it up.
I still dont know why I write such things... maybe its the phase of the moon.
