FINISHED-DONE FINALLY! EVH General Lee super strat

Thanks for taking the time to go through the process with me.  I just might someday try it.  I'm a natural wood guy myself what do they call them furniture guitars?  Anyway I am really impressed with the results.

The bike is an 07 sportster 1200N they call it the nightster (I think that is a corny name) all factory blacked out.  I put the Screamin Eagle stage one air cleaner and a Vance & Hines fuelpak for fuel management.  07 sportsters went to fuel injection.  Pipes are V-Twin manufacturing I got a great deal on them on ebay.  I have done some other little cosmetic things to it (seat, covers, risers, etc)  She will get up and go, I can pretty much smoke a stock big harley off the line all day.  That was my 30th birthday gift to myself.  I supported my wife (then fiance)  through nursing school  and she was like, "you deserve something for busting your balls to put me through school"  I worked six days a week for two years so she could concentrate on school and not work.  I think she thought I 'deserved' something along the lines of a guitar or something, but I figured that is was a now or never situation, I had a really good job then, so I could afford it so I went for it.  I love it man.  That bike, my Fender Bassman amp, and my Am. Std. Stratocaster are the only things I really own that are worth any amount of money.  I don't plan on selling any of them any time soon, the bike will be paid off in 6 months, it has been a little bit of a struggle to make payments with my work situation lately, but the wife has been a real sport about helping me out with it.  I am sure glad she went to school now, she is bringing home the bacon right now.  And the eggs, milk, toilet paper and bread!!!

Once again thanks for putting the time into posting your technique.....

Thats some pretty cool spalted maple man! heard that stuff is tricky to work with though but is sure is cool lookin :glasses9:

Don't know what i will do for the next one I build-alder and paint-mahogany and figured maple clear finish dyed top, so many choices :tard:.
I really had fun though painting this and its so one of a kind in color-I'd actualy like to do or learn the classic old school hotrod flames next in a tri or quad color but don't know if I can pull it off. I may have to invest in a airbrush to do it best.
One thing about painting with spray bombs is the big cans of duplicolor will work-thats acrylic lacquer in the big cans and can then be covered with nitro clear no problem.
this one took so long because of the grain filling required and finding a white base coat suitable for underneath that orange I did. Next time I won't really have to fuss around with those two things in the process and it will go much quicker I think since I will be going for a completely different finish next time.
There is a cool satin antique look on some furniture I seen-if I find a pic I'll post it-but it would look really cool-even the finish looks weathered and very natural. that will make a guitar I can really bang around and be less fussy with. Paint is cool until you gouge it up or scratch it-but I like the look of the certain bar tops at some old bars where the old mahogany is really worn and antiqued-it would be a great look on a straight mahogany strat body I think. And maybe order it with no body face radiused edge to give a more squared off utilitarian look.

They are decals from a shop only a few blocks from my house-custom made and stick on-just like the real General Lees were after the very first car was produced-the first one ever was hand painted on. :icon_biggrin:

Thanks cooter, the spalt isn't really to difficult. I covered mine with epoxy, worked out great..Now you need this to go with your gutar... :icon_biggrin:

You used epoxy?? Could you tell me more about that process?
I almost attempted using that as a grain filler for this ash body after I heard some other guys did it. Kinda was nervous though since I heard it is tricky to apply and went with the elmers wood filler.
I seen black epoxy used as grain filler on a tinted clear finish and it was super beautiful-made the grain just jump right out visually!

Pretty simple really. I just used Loctite 2 ton epoxy, it come in a double syringe, just mix it up on a piece of cardboard and apply it on with an old credit card. Let it cure for about 48 hrs then sand level. It took about 3 applications to get it totally level. You do have to be quick with it, so it's a good idea to get everthing ready ahead of time, and apply it as thin as possible.
