*FINISHED!* Dave Murray 'Aces High' Signature Strat

Well, hell hath frozen over.  :laughing7:

My body is arriving tomorrow (so says FedEx tracking) - so we shall soon see if it was worth the eight month wait...

I've been refraining from posting updates, just because I never knew when (or if) I'd get the body back.

Many, many more updates soon to follow...

Hey ORCRiST, I just seen gun shell guitar knobs for sale at Allparts.com. They look just like Remington bullets. I thought of your guitar when I seen them. :headbang:
They are also in chrome.

Nice! I feel honored. Thanks Firebird!  :)

Ok boys and girls - the following was waiting for me when I walked in the door today - its been a while, and at times I admit I thought I'd never see it again. Well after all is said and done - I have to say the cliche'd: "it was worth the wait" holds true... I've had many pictures sent to me over the painting process, and none of them held a candle to having the real thing in my hands. The following are a few pics I took. They're taken in my basement with no windows and a few flourecent lights at night - needless to say some of the pics are fuzzy. I tried a bunch of camera settings as all the flash settings washed out the colors, so trying to capture its true color, I turned off the flash. While some are a tad blurry - I tried to show how much darker things really are. In addition I and my friend have handled it a bit by now so there are fingerprints all over it (I quickly buffed out as many I could with my 100% cotton sleeve). ;) Needless to say it is pure sex to handle and the finish and clear coats are absolutley IMMACULATE. There are absolutley no bumps or flaws period. It feels like holding one beautifully crafted piece of flawless glass. So, any imperfections you might think you see in the finish are a result of my shiteeety camera skills, poor lighting, and fingerprints. Oh, the sharp-eyed will notice some polishing compound in the recesses and corners, that will all be cleaned up in due time...

This is how the 2-piece Alder body left my house after it was delivered from Warmoth...

I really love the exhaust pipe, its very very subtle. Being near the top it contends with the black burst from the back, only in the flash pics
(of which, this is not one, heh) does it look crisp and too metallic. Trust me, its not. I told Patrick I wanted it to look like the discoloring
found on motorcycle pipes for example and he F-ing nailed it. Its really sublime actually, exactly what I wanted and then some.

Well, thats it for now. More pics once everything is cleaned up and I have better lighting.

That is a seriously cool finishing job...! I'll have to read up on this thread and start to follow it properly :icon_biggrin:

The old Maiden fan in me is a bit jealous... there was a time when I was a teen, I would've killed to have that.

One question on the tailpipe - is it airbrushed, or is it applied like the Eddie pic? I don't know much about airbrushing, so I don't know if you can make something look like that, and have the line so straight.

Wow, this is AWESOME. I love that decal on the headstock. Its good to know that someone had a pleasant experience with Sims. Mine unfortunately was not. I hear that that is the general consensus, but he does AMAZING work.

Thanks everyone!

Yes its airbrushed, the only thing that isn't 100% paint on the body is the Eddie decal buried underneath the clear.
The clean lines are brought to you courtesy of some stencils. Although, I saw the complete stencil kit before painting
even began (for my approval) - and the only design elements that used stencils are three; 1. the British 'bullseye' and its
rings, 2. The German 'Iron Cross' kill markers, 3. the 'Engine Start Plug' lettering at the jack. So as far as I'm aware,
everything else was all done by Patrick.

Patrick sent along some pictures today that I hadn't seen yet, and seeing as how it addresses your question, viola!
He said he used the exhaust manifold straight from my inital concept drawing, and used that as a template for size and
dimensions on the actual body:

Very cool. Sims certainly does impressive work... too bad so many people have had a negative experience with him.

Ok, more pics!

This is a summary of my very first post to these forums way back in January, as this was the first thing I actually bought for the project
that up until then only exsisted in my mind (such as it is).  :laughing7:

First off let me say this is a very expensive project (for me anyways). I could have easily bought a Custom Shop strat for the amount I've spent on constituant parts (and the guitar is obviously not finished yet), I only mention the 'funds' issue at all (this is about love, money be damned) because of this: Ruthenium.

http://schaller-electronic.com/hp4750/Ruthenium-the-Black-Pearl-of-Schaller.htm

vJoDR3q.jpg

To quote: "Ruthenium is an extremely hard, shiny metal and is found in association with platinum ores. It is very rare; no more than 120 kilograms are produced per year. This accounts for the high cost of ruthenium; it is more expensive than both gold and platinum."

I didn't set out wanting to use anything expensive or exotic, its all about the looks. Once I saw it, I knew I had to have it for this guitar. Out of all the parts a electric guitar requires, the hardware was the very first thing I bought for this project... and its been the hardest thing to get.

When I first discovered this rare metal from Schaller back in January, I began my search. When I first started researching Ruthenium it was (is) a 'black-hole' on the 'Net. Other than Schaller itself, a german-only Schaller dealer, and sunglasses coated with Ruthenium on Ebay I found no retail or sales outlets of any kind. After I initally contacted Schaller in Germany they directed me to Allparts. After trading emails with Allparts (who had NO CLUE) what I was on about - they responded with a price list of all the hardware I wanted costing over $800 (we're talking a Floyd Rose and locking tuners here) oh, and a minimum three month wait.

Unacceptable.

So, long story long - I ended up dealing directly with CEO and owner of Schaller himself. An international bank transfer and a month later - I had this:

UlbHIzF.jpg

Once again, those pics don't do them justice. Some of you may be asking: "Self, that IS a cool color, but its just a trem." Well you'd be right.

However... Ruthenium has some very interesting properties that working musicians will love. First and foremost being, whats wrong with most cool "looking" hardware choices? They fade, tarnish, and otherwise discolor over time - and rapidly when in contact with the acidic sweat of hard rocking guitarists!

Ruthenium does not and will not. And I quote: "At room temperatures, ruthenium keeps its shiny, metallic surface and does not tarnish. Acids cannot damage it when it is deprived of oxygen. Ruthenium plating stands up to extreme mechanical demands and – especially interesting for musicians – it is surprisingly resistant to sweat and other chemical damage.*"

So I now have all my hardware in INDESTRUCTABLE Adamanti...er, Ruthenium. But really, in the end it just looks SO COOL. It interplays and changes in the light constantly, its quite mesmerizing actually - like staring into a bonfire.

Wow. I mean - wow. You're the first person I've ever heard of getting these parts. I almost thought they were a myth.

So, now you've got the only body and neck like yours on the planet, and are one of the very few who have that hardware. You're going to have to treat this thing like a bubble boy, lock it up and let it get away with murder <grin>

No way Cagey! I won't be taking it to any clubs - but rest assured I'll play the F**K out of it!   :guitaristgif: But thank you, believe me I jumped through
plenty of hoops to get them, nevermind the cashola - they're well earned!  :icon_biggrin:

you have my vote for the next pro-finish gotm

one thing though.. not sure if you mentioned it, but what kind of pg will go on this???

Thanks for that Marko. That answer is found on page 2!

A smoke/transparent pickguard.  With that much "art" going on, it's a shame it wasn't rear routed.

I thought about that before I ordered anything from W - but if it was rear-routed it really wouldn't be a Dave Murray strat...let alone a 'normal' strat.

If you notice all of the major design elements are outside if the pickguard area, because I knew it was going to have a PG from the beginning. :)
I have no problem at all with a pickguard (which is strange because normally I hate them), however, in this case the .90 black gloss/white/black pickguard
will be a 'reflecting pool' of sorts mirroring the Ruthenium trem and humbucker mounting rings. Its a vintage 8-hole, with Delonge Volume Option, Floyd Rose
cut, standard strat control layout.

This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone on the entireity of internet obtaining those parts. There's lots of beautiful pictures on the website. And lots of people from Europe and all over on the internet. But surely if they went through the trouble to make them and produce glossy pictures, this has to be an active production product right? So where are they?  No one lights a lamp and places it under a basket do they? I guess Schaller does.

Also - Schaller says on their website that part of their distributor agreement requires partners to obtain any Schaller product they carry on request. (Stew-Mac said flat out NO, as did Luthiers Mercantile and a few others I didn't write down. In my fuzzy recollection I thought Allparts told me no on my top-locking mini schallers.)  Hopefully since I'm not looking for Ruthenium it won't cost me an arm and a leg or two.

I hear you. I don't get it either - Schaller makes a range of colors (and some sweet hardware options too) that many people would LOVE to have. If you search the Hardware section other people have expressed interest in other (and less expensive) options, yet NO ONE seems to carry anything outside of: Black, Chrome or Gold. I just don't get it. Isn't the point of owning a business to sell things and making it as easy as possible for other people to buy them from you?  :dontknow:
