It'll be fun to follow you along. What is the bridge you're planning to use?

Thanks. It's an 80s Kahler knock-off.

No Sir, The Bird is the Word....

Sorry, my mistake - and after everybody heard.

What amazes me is that song made it to 4th place on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and 3rd place on the UK Singles chart.

Pete, I mean this in the most complimentary way:

No one would ever mistake one of your instruments for a mass-produced axe.

I am looking forward to seeing this come together.

Thanks Ian, though in this case there's a chance they might, as it's a 'tribute', as in not quite a copy, of a mass-produced axe.:

Got the 6 mm MDF templates cut out and shaped - here's one of them:

Copied to an 18 mm working template:

Doesn't quite seem to be a 100% accurate copy for some reason. Need to work on that.

In reality, such as it is, somebody asked me to make them a non-reverse Firebird body (Gibson's prettiest design*) and I'm using the horse chestnut blank for that instead. Best laid plans and all that...

I have a sycamore maple blank I could use for the Teisco-alike, but it would need to be chambered as it's heavier than a goth's nightmare. More likely, the next 'fun' build will be the shrunken Jazzmaster/Jaguar (form an orderly queue).

On a vaguely related note, but mainly just because I like the close-ups, if you're using a router and you want it to cut nicely, clean your cutters.

Elbowing myself to the front of the queue.
Seriously Pete, if it’s possible to order from you a shrunken Jaguar, I’ll just scream from the top of my lungs: ”Take my money!”.

DM me ... or is it ok to DM you?

DM sent.

Thanks for your support and encouragement, Magnus - and not just for my stuff. I wish i could be such a positive presence across the forum, but I'm probably too self-absorbed (or just not such a nice guy).

But you are a positive presence! Perhaps more than you know.

Now for the DM  :icon_thumright:

Unnecessary update time #WhyNot?

Non-reverse firebird done. Scratchplate also made from, umm... scratch. What was I thinking?

Its new owner will be painting it, so I'll post a finished pic if/when I can.

Looking good. It'll be fun to see what color he chooses for it. Made-From-Scrachplate. Sounds like a marketable idea.  :icon_biggrin:

Time for an update? Of course it is, so here's a few things done for other people...

Here's what the new owner did with the Firebird:

Headstock decal says 'Fenderbird'.

New owner in question must be a glutton for punishment as I also made him a simple LP (not as a commercial arrangement of course Mr Gibson/Norlin/whatever you're called):

Not sure if he's finished it yet, but he mocked it up:

That one says 'Fenderpaul'.

Also a simple reverse Strat for the same gent:

He has finished that:

I must get round to doing something for myself...

Here's one I'm doing for myself.

As previously threatened, I've started work on the Ozelot.

This is more of the hard ash from the beginning of the thread, but the stringers and top will be some sort of mahogany-alike, previously a shelf in a WW2-era 'utility furniture' cabinet - not where you'd expect to find mahogany, though they would have used whatever was to hand, so could be utile or something. Old and dry and doubtless full of that Grandma's front room mojo.

Lump:

Lump with chambers cut out:

FPSwEyG.jpg

Close-up of the Plangent tone grooves®, linking the chambers for bonus acoustic goodness. Subject to change depending what sort of 'soundhole(s)' I decide on.

More soon-ish...

The non-reverse Firebird is an outstanding guitar. 'Fenderbird' suits it fine. The Fenderpaul is close behind, too. I'm not overly excited about a reverse Strat but that's well made, too. Great work, Pete.

I'm likin' that Ozelot a lot. LOL, Ozelotalot. With the mojo mahogany top, it should be a fine one.

Hey Pete!  Howdidya clean that cutter?  Got some special secret techniques?

That's a fine lookin' lineup there Pete. You've been busy............ :headbang:

And I'll second the quest, what's your bit cleaning technique? If you don't mind revealing..... :cool01:

Happy to share my special secret technique, but read closely - this will get extremely technical...

There are some specialist cutter cleaning products out there, but what I use is a 50/50 mix of liquid laundry detergent and water. Let the cutter(s) soak for 10 minutes or so, then have at 'em with an old stiff toothbrush. Afterwards make sure they're completely dry before use. I apply a little GT85 (PTFE lubricant), but I'm not sure you can get that in the US any more.

On a serious note, just in case this isn't obvious to anybody reading this, you must remove any bearings before cleaning - water and soap does not belong inside those! I recommend undoing end-mounted bearings with the bit chucked in the (disconnected) router, not held in your hand. Also, make sure any dust shield washers are put back the right way round.

Now I'm off to make a clock...

I'll vouch for not holding a cutter in your hand to remove the bearings. :icon_biggrin:
